Hey,
We've entered and been accepted as a team for the stbox Rally in 2013, www.stboxrally.com.au ( http://tinyurl.com/nhawz7 since PH is slapping censored in) for those that haven't heard of it. It's a great cause raising funds for the Cancer Council and should be a fantastic experience to take part in.
We're going to be driving from Adelaide to Fremantle via Uluru and the Great Central Rd through the middle of the red centre, in a car that has to be bought and road legal for under $1000....
Buying something under $1000 isn't looking overly hard with shedloads of suitable stboxes out there, it's the roadworthy part that if we buy it in Vic poses a bit of a challenge.
As such can anyone tell me what the requirements are for SA registered vehicles, can someone in another state buy a car and drive it till the rego runs out without needing to get a RWC done as is needed in Vic?
Asking as the two main options I am looking at currently are hopping over to Adelaide and buying something there to use in the rally, or get something in Vic but would have to be pre-1987 to quality for club permit rego to give us a chance of keeping it under the $1000 limit.
Oh and if anyone fancies making a donation to this fantastic cause, I got our donation page set up and live this morning - http://fundraise.stboxrally.com.au/team_tepid_t ( http://tinyurl.com/d9afxx2 )
Cheers,
Al

Good on you, should be great fun, and as you say a good cause.
My understanding is there is no problem running it until the rego runs out, why wouldn't you just buy a VIC registered car with sufficient rego?
I would have thought if you buy an SA registered car you have to register it to an SA address. If you want to register it to your VIC address, then you have to get your VIC registration, along with RWC and other requirements.
Or am I missing something?

Yeah, that's the issue - in Vic the RWC is done on transfer so anything bought here will have to have an RWC straight away.
Suspect that would indeed still apply as wouldn't have an SA address to register it to, and there's prob a 14 day time period or similar where it'd have to be transfered.

Ok, didn't realise that. But I assume that's just the RWC which should be dead easy, it's not like you have to re-register the car? I'd also suggest it probably wouldn't be that hard to 'buy' an RWC if you're determined to buy something unroadworthy Unless SA allow you to run it till the end of its rego there and then re-register it interstate after that rather than right away I don't think it'd work the way I was hoping.
To register in Vic the SA rego would need to be cashed in and re-registered here, and unless it's something pre-1987 that can go on a club permit that would be $660 just in Vic rego.
Thinking I don't want to be getting a dodgy RWC done, going to be doing 4000Km in the car through the outback so would rather it didn't kill us..

I don't see how SA wouldn't allow it. Especially looking at the banner on the website every single car is NSW registered - and in the gallery, plenty of VIC registered cars.I get the feeling I'm missing something in your query...
I think the crux of my query is:
1) When do SA cars need an RWC or equivalent safety check? Yearly/on transfer/etc?
2) Is it the same as vic where buyer and seller need to send off a paperwork mountain (in vic inc an RWC) to transfer the rego within 14 days of sale? Or does the seller just send off something with the buyers details and then the buyer has to do something about it next time the renewal comes up.

My point is I don't know why you're wondering. 1) When do SA cars need an RWC or equivalent safety check? Yearly/on transfer/etc?

What is the barrier to using a VIC rego car? The cars are going into an auction at the end anyway, and if you want to buy it back, you're buying a VIC registered car back?
It seems you don't need an RWC when you transfer the car (or indeed annually!):

But then you're still left with not having an SA address to register it to. Unless you can find a friendly shagyerdadelaideian.
