It's going to be some time till the TVR arrives (if it ever does...), so I need (or fancy) something in the mean time.

Was originally thinking of Defender/Disco 3, but I'd rather not ship too much cash here (with the current Ex Rate) - so thought I'd lower the budget to circa $15k.

Are Disco 2's a decent buy? It's only for weekend use really, as I work away during the week (fly) - so shops, trips etc where I don't want to take the TVR.

I'd get a Forester instead.

Yep, our D2 has been a great buy, only ever gets used for off road trips and a little bit of running around with the dog etc but has been no grief at all and has a glorious v8 rumble. 33" muddies, winch, bar, difflocks etc so pretty well set up.

I see P38 Range Rovers have dropped a lot too, quite a few around the $5k mark so you'd get a nice one for $15k easily.

Went round several dealerships today, amazing how much cars cost here! Conversations with sales people were interesting - "What do you want and what's your budget?"
"No idea and no idea!"

I kept being (stupidly) drawn to looking at 2 seater sports cars, which I absolutely do not need - and had to keep reminding myself that I already have one on the way here!

I think in light of what I've seen today I need to reassess my budget, and start looking at the Disco 3 (TDV6 SE seems most sensible) which come in at $30-40k at the lower end. I can then keep that as a sensible/touring/visitors car.

Also I've never bought a car with finance before, don't like the idea of it, but might need to in the short term until I've built up some savings here. Although I've got to weigh up paying 9% finance, vs biting the ForEx bullet and moving UK savings here (where I get bugger all interest).

Decisions, decisions.

Actually just had a brainwave to get around the short term cashflow issue, I can get a novated lease through work - which would also provide me with tax savings as well.

Anyone had experience/thoughts on novated leases?

Well, I've done it - bought a Disco 3 V6 SE.

7 seats is probably unnecessary for a 'single' guy! wink

laugh

I got a Novated quote, but I can't get over the interest rates over here (especially compared to UK savings rates), so decided against it in the end.

All being well I pick it up Saturday.

We looked in depth at a Novated lease, but although they are great ways to buy cars, in the end it didn't make sense as we have a better car (which is paid for) being shipped over.

Have just spent $12k on a 2005 Honda CRV ("Sport" - which seems to mean it drinks fuel like a sports car!). Seems to do the job..
