Guy's, I'm trying to suss out how my wages will compare if I moved to Perth as I'd be keeping my current job and paying Oz tax. Could you give me an idea of what would be an average, good & excellent earnings in Australia / Perth. I mean what do I need to be bringing home to afford an above average, nice house with a few luxerys? Also what are you guys sriving out there? I've had a look and think I'll have to say goodbye to driving German cars, so whats the thing to be driving out there? Thanks in advance for your advice.

There is a very rough rule of thumb which (some) people use to work out what they need to maintain their UK standard of living. They multiply their UK salary by 2.2 and thats what you need in Perth to maintain your standard of living. For example, if you earn £20k in the UK you need $44k in Perth.

However, it depends on your sector - In the UK a mechanical design engineer will do well to earn £30k but in Perth he could easily earn $140k.

I've asked similar questions on here recently so you should find the answers a bit further down the Australia forum thread list.

Was www.seek.com.au any use for working out salaries?

No idea how current or correct it is.

Seek was useful but for me (as a mechanical engineer) I found the average is highly skewed (upward) by recruitment agencies posting only the highest end of the available salary for the job. For example, if a job was advertised at $200k, you could only really get that with many years experience in that exact field. However if the employer was happy to look at those with less experience the salary was nearer $150k. However, that is something I've found previously in the UK with the likes of www.reed.co.uk

Thanks guys, I'll read through it but how much in you're opinion does someone need to earn to have a good life style in Perth?

Remember that I've not even arrived there yet but from what I gather, $120k+ is where you need to be. I'm sure others will be able to give a more accurate answer.

Depends :-

The wife and I do alright. But we've no kids.

Living in an expensive apartment, driving a 2010 Hilux will all the toys.
We eat out often, and go to as many events as we can.
