Perth - Here we come!
Discussion
After 18 months in planning and far too much money spent on the visa application process, I've just had written confirmation of my new job in Perth, starting second week of September!
Its a bit of a change of industry for me having worked with electrical accessories (plugs, sockets etc.) for many years I'll now be working for a company that manufactures heavy machinery related to mining. Getting a break into the well paid mining sector is difficult so I'm really pleased that my foot is firmly in the door.
We arrive on September 1st and have a holiday rental booked for the first week right on the coast in Shoalwater before moving up to Clarkson where we've booked a small place for the rest of the month. My new employer is going to provide a vehicle for us to use for the first 2 weeks.
Annoyingly my current employer has asked me to not tell my colleagues until the end of July!
To say we're excited is an understatement!

I apologise in advance for sort of going off topic but where do you book your flights in the UK? ie what websites do you use?
Or should I ask this in the Holiday section?
We booked directly on the airline's website (Malaysia) but our decision was based more on the available legroom in economy and the arrival time in Perth. You'll find that many flights to Perth arrive between midnight and 1AM which we diddnt really want to do. The Malaysia flight arrives at 3PM.Or should I ask this in the Holiday section?
Price wise there wasnt really much between all the major airlines and the one-way flight for two came in around £1300 plus £140 extra for reserving exit row seating.

Well done, congratulations 200hp!! I would be interested to know wh oyou found best to contact for jobs out there, sounds like you've landed on your feet!
Believe it of not I found the job through Google Street View!A few months back I started contacting companies I found through Google by searching key phrases related to engineering design. I sent about 50 emails and got a couple of replies asking me to get in touch and go for an interview upon arrival.
Once I'd exhausted the Google search results, I noticed that most of the companies I'd found were in smallish clusters on industrial estates so I got onto Streetview and took a virtual drive down all of the roads, googling the company names as I passed. This lead me to another 20+ companies and it was one of these who responded very positively to my email and ended up offering me the job.
I personally found the recruitment agencies to be pretty useless (as they are in the UK). None of them wanted to talk unless you're just a couple of weeks away from arrival and none would entertain the idea of me taking a step back in my career in order to get experience in another field. I got the impression that they have a load of jobs with required skills on a check-list and if you dont fit exactly they dont want to know.
You will find that many of the large companies have job micro-sites on their website where you can register your CV and apply for vacant positions. I did a few of these but nothing came of it.
I think the best course of action is to send a carefully tailored covering letter and CV to each potential employer. I put in quite a lot of effort researching each company and their products and tried to get something relevant into the letter and CV - Remember that if they get you CV directly they wont have to pay a recruitment agents fee.

Thanks 200bhp! I like the idea of reserving exit row seats. Price wise there wasnt really much between all the major airlines and the one-way flight for two came in around £1300 plus £140 extra for reserving exit row seating.

The only "small print" you need to know about is that they can still refuse those seats if they think you dont look physically able to open the door at check-in or if there are disabled passengers who need the extra space. How they can list both of those contradictory things in the same criteria, I dont know!! If they refuse the seats on either of those grounds you dont get your seat reservation premium refunded either. Our little Perth PH clan is growing
Where is the job? Most of those industries are around Welshpool... commuting from either the deep south or the far north will be horrible, if it is Welshpool you might want to look out my way (Kalamunda, I'm 10 minutes from Welshpool/Kewdale/Airport)

Oh and in Clarkson you won't even notice that you've left England... except for the sand
Hillarys or Sorrento would be very nice
One thing we really want to avoid is living among a bunch or Brits! Sadly there accommodation which is available to book from the UK is limited so that's how we ended up there.Hillarys or Sorrento would be very nice
Are there any areas which are not frequented by Brits in union jack shorts complaining that it's too hot?
