It pays to shop around on insurance.
Discussion
I could't believe the difference recently after purcahasing a Mercedes SLK 320 and was quoted $720 by my insurance company, wher I have another car insured, for an agreed value. Out of curiosity I decided to shop around, and immediately found another company who bettered it by $100 and astounded to fins a third company who insured the car for $472....a saving of $200 on an agreed value. I couldn't believe the difference, all by large well known companies. It certainly pays to shop around.
Anyone know what the reason is for companies not insuring an import?
I know that different cars come under different risk predictions but say you imported a like for like model that was available for sale in Australia then you wouldn't be any more likely statistically to crash it. Also if you're car was a write off then they could pay you out a lower figure if your car was an import as well.

I still have the TR7 & TR8 with Shannons, as they were quite competitive on them, & offer better conditions, like choice of repairer.
However on the S2000, the local Ford Capri, & the ladies Mazda their price had skyrocketed, with no claims or changes.
I saved about $1000 on them with Just Car. Just were also the only reasonable company for the daughter when she was still in her teens. Something like $1500,00 cheaper on a $6000,00 car.

I've wondered myself. When I asked (after being told they wouldn't insure my car as it's an import) the default answer was "because they're more dangerous", which just goes to show the person at the end of the phone didn't have a clue either! My car, a 2011 Porsche Cayenne, has only two different things between the UK model and Australian model - the SatNav map and the sticker behind the speedo, but apparently these two things mean it can't be insured as a non-imported car.
