Hi all, can someone confirm exactly what I need to do when I buy a car privately in NSW and whether these costs seem reasonable? I think this is the complete list...

2000 MX-5 1.8, 30 year old (me not the car!), 5yrs No claims will be transferred from UK...cars rego ends in Sept 2012

CTP Greenslip - $730 AAMI - Before I drive away car - Annual? (Seems expensive wih comprehensive as well!)
Comprehensive Insurance - $1000 AAMI - Before I drive away car - Annual
Rego Transfer - $29 ? - Within 14 days of purchase - One off
Stamp Duty - Is this on privately bought cars as well, or just dealer? 3% below 45k? - One off

When Rego expires...
Pink Slip $30 - If over 5 years old - Annual
Rego - $315 - For a year? - Annual

Its overly complicated. Just sayin'.......... rolleyes

Get on the CTP comparo website as it seems expensive - I am 27 and am paying $430 for my Golf with NRMA.

I reckon you could get cheaper insurance as well - I'm paying $1200 for mine, with all modifications (intake, remap) listed and an agreed value of 55k.

But, yeah apart from that, it seems right.

You also have rego fees each year when it comes up for registration of around $230.

Stamp duty applies to all cars purcashed. See if you can get the receipt made out for less.

Who are you insured with if you don't mind me asking?
Also do any companies include the greenslip with the normal comprehensive insurance?

Stamp duty payable below $10k? Found some places that say no?

Does the previous owner cancel their greenslip when you buy from them and you take it out until the rego is up or just for a year inline with normal insurance?

It seems odd you need comprehensive insurance and compulsory 3rd party....its not really comprehensive if you need a a seperate 3rd party policy?

I'm with NRMA.

This is going to be a typical PH response, but I've never bought a car below 10k so no idea.

The greenslip is a compulsory part of rego - if it is purchased as registered then it will include both rego and the CTP insurance.

CTP covers injury/medical type things basically. It's nothing to do with property damage.

Yeah ok. Comprehensive over in the UK covers "comprehensively" hence my confusion.

My original intention was to go for something like a 350Z or S2000 or Boxster however I want to remain debt free, not get clobbered by depreciation and need a cheap fun run about in the mean time....still only been here 6 months.

If I fancy getting bent over a barrel at about 10% interest and 20% depreciation p.a. in the future I will probably upgrade, but right now cash is more important. I will probably keep it for a year max anyway before I get bored and want something different. You cannot buy anything for worth having for much less than this, I agree!

anyway i will trawl the t'internet a bit more I guess for decent insurance quotes and more info on the stamp duty...

I remember paying 3% on the price of the old 405 I bought a few years ago and that was well under $10k. RMS website has all this info (used to be called RTA)

As for insurance I've got my 98 MX5 with Shannons - best combination of cover and price for me, about $700 parked on the street, where AAMI wanted close to $1000.

As an aside I've got all the expenses for the Forester this month - rego, CTP and insurance - $1400 is the best I can do for a bog-std car, parked on a driveway, both drivers over 40 with clean licences and full NCB. Criminal. Welcome to NSW...
