Hi everyone I should be joining the Oz PHers very soon. I am hoping to be in Melbourne in the next 2 weeks. No flights booked yet as still waiting on the 457 visa to come through but I've been told it should be imminent! I'm going to be living in northern Melbourne (probably in or near Epping) as that's where I will be working.

I am a massive petrolhead and as far as I can see from my research so far this is the only downside of moving to Oz from the uk...the cars are so expensive and also the police take an even dimmer view of speeding than the uk (which I think has improved since the Tories came to power).

Now from research on the net it seems the nearest tasty roads near me are in the Yarra ranges...any of you guys frequent the black spur? I've heard lots said about the Great Ocean road too...any thoughts? Whatever the case the roads have got to be better than Leicester in the uk which I've been dashing up and down the last few years!

I am hoping to get myself in a 370z roadster pretty pronto once I get there and I intend to make full use of it in Oz. Do any of you meet regularly for a general hoon? I really enjoyed the ph Sunday services in the uk and it would be great to get something similar going in Oz.

Sorry to witter on but very excited to be going down under!

G'day Adeel,

Welcome to Oz (well almost anyway)
IMHO the best section of driving road in Victoria is on the Great Alpine Road
between Harrietville and Omeo in the north-east of the state. It is a little
further away than the other roads you mention but well worth the trip.
Stop in the pretty village of Bright on the way and then enjoy the views up and
over the mountains, well suited to the Nissan. Cheers, Mark.

Thanks Mark, I will definitely be checking the great alpine road out! Whereabouts are you based?

No way you can bring your car with you? My biggest regret is not bring a car over with me. The cars here are very expensive, but having said that the police are quite strict and therefore you probably dont want a car that is too fast until you get used to the ridiculous speed limits!

I live in central Melbourne, basically on Albert Park lake, and head up through the yarra valley regularly by either bike or car and also the Great Ocean Road. The Great Alpine road is also a good road, but getting there is the problem. Once you get here no doubt we could arrange a get together with some other ph'ers. Not that I have met any of the Melbourne people....

I've already gotten rid of the C63 that has been my pride and joy for the last year. I looked into bringing it to oz but it was on a finance deal here and it just seemed too complicated in the end. Before I knew I would be moving to Australia I was planning to replace it with an slk55 as I have been hankering for a convertible but no way can I afford one of those in oz. So 370z it is! No V8 sound but with an akrapovic exhaust on the Nissan won't sound too bad...

Interesting Panayiotis that you mention you bike as well. I had a zx6-r in the uk but never got to ride it much, around 3000 miles in 5 years, mostly due to me being a wuss in the rain (and a bit lazy wanting the comfort of a car). What is the bike scene like in Melbourne? I'd love to get a bike as well but maybe something a little more comfortable than a super sports.

Not long back from a holiday in the United States. The only downside was seeing how
little they pay for their cars, their petrol and just about everything else!
We pay through the nose here in Oz.

Resurrecting this thread! I have been in Melbourne for around 2 months now. As to be expected, I have been really busy settling in (finding house to rent, sorting out furniture, phone line, Internet etc etc) and getting used to my new job. It's really difficult at the moment because my family are still in the uk (not arriving until the end of the year) so I am all on my lonesome frown .

I am sure I will enjoy Oz once my family get here and I am settled. Of course it doesn't help that I have arrived at a time in the year when the weather is much like the uk!

I have got the aforementioned 370z. Been too busy with work to drive it much but I did take it to the black spur. Tbh I was a little disappointed after the hype as although it was twisty, it didn't have the elevation and epic scenery of the best roads in Wales/Scotland. Can anyone point me in the direction of some other good twisties?

Anyone local petrolheads up for a meet?

Sorry read that back and I sound like a right whinging c**k! I'm not I promise, life is great and so is Oz!!!

You wanted twisties with a view? !!! wink mmm
I am too busy concentrating on the twisties to notice the view!!!
Mount Donna Buang is another good drive. I have driven Black spur once and I reckon there are roads nearby that are better. Somebody has told me the back road to Bright and north out of Yea is good but I have never been there. It is the road the magazines use for some of their photoshoots.
I work shiftwork so I normally only get time to go out late at night or during the week.
