New to Perth living NOR, and travel on the Mitchell Freeway and have noticed the new fixed speed camera on the freeway and several items in the news and local papers about its great success rate.
Question is its a 100 limit and despite traveling at that speed or just below there is constantly someone up your arse trying to overtake at that spot and most cars seem to be travelling at well over 100 are people just unaware of it being there, or just dont care,or does it not really work?

Just wondering

Supposedly it works but the average Perth driver has a short attention span, a massive lack of forethought and zero observation skills.

Over the coming months you will become increasingly frustrated with driving in busy areas but you just have to go with the flow and pick your moments to make a break for it....if there is a rolling road block there aint much you can do about it. Remember you are allowed to overtake on the left here.

You will notice really silly things, people ALWAYS accelerate in to merge areas so dont assume that gap that you were going to slot in to is still there in 30 meters time at the actual merge point.

You will slow down for traffic ahead but the person behind will jump in to the other lane to get past without looking slightly further ahead and seeing the stopped traffic.

My commute to work is a good 5 minutes quicker if I stay in the left lane, everyone is obsessed with sitting in the right lane. I have honestly sat in the left lane and gone past a row of 30 cars sitting in the right lane going 20kmh slower than me with clear road ahead.

Anyway enough ranting...Like I said, not much you can do about driving standards here so you just have to keep your cool and go with it.

Cheers for that, fully agree with you and I too currently travel in the left lane as it is faster, due to everyone trying to make it to the right hand lane to stop very funny, getting used to the Aussie style of driving i guess you just have too.

Just arrived back in Sydney from Perth and after driving there for the last five days I can say with some confidence that on the whole the drivers in Perth make our lot look brilliant.

Tailgating, hogging the RH lane and absolutely no grasp of the fundamentals of merging or manners if you let someone in.

The standard of driving here is pretty low and makes people back in the UK look like driving Gods in comparison. The most frustrating thing is how slowly everyone drives around here. I know that they are really strict on speeding over here but people just hog the lane they are in whatever speed they are going.

Also people seem to like to bunch up behind one another in one lane, leaving the other lane empty which is good for people with a brain as they can then use that lane and just flow through the city.

Just spent 7 days in Sydney, and had been warned about the drivers. They were pretty bad, and no mistake.

Slooowwww accelerators to. Everyone drives around in 4 litre cars but seems to scared to use a bit of that torque to accelerate briskly down a slip road or away from the lights.

I dont hang around at the lights and tend to accelerate away quite smartly. I look in the mirrors and just as the cars that were next to or behind me are becoming dots they are just clearing the intersection. I am surprised I have not been pulled over to be honest as to an outsider it might look like I am giving it the full beans.

I'm the same.

Makes your car feel faster as well biggrin

I sit in the left lane on all motorways and can go much, much quicker than in the right.

I live NOR and use the Freeway to commute into the city as well. The camera is working and has already picked up an enormous amount of speeding drivers. I honestly can't see the point in it. When it's rush hour there's no chance of seeing 100kph and when it's not busy I can't think of a safer stretch of tarmac to travel quickly on in Perth!
I use a motorbike for my commute now and it saves a bit of time over driving a car. I was however hit by a car last week which wasn't pleasant! I was travelling at about 90kph (not lane splitting) and the car next to me moved over and hit me and the continued to push me from the right wheel track of the middle lane all the way into the inside lane. Luckily I managed to push myself off his A pillar and accelerate away from him. He just didn't look at all!!
When driving in WA, always expect the worst from the drivers around you. Every now and again, you'll be pleasantly surprised - not very often though!!
