I currently work in the uk Motor trade within a main dealer network as a sales executive (terry tibbs) but I have always wanted to make the move down under I'm in no rush to make a move as my finances are not in place.

Has anyone worked in the motor trade down under and if so what’s it like salary, working hours and the receptionist lol

If the Motor trade is crap there can you recommend something similar?

Any feed back welcome

There are Nissans here you know.

Amazing cars like the Nissan Tiida. Stunning piece of automotive brilliance.

From what I gather chatting to people that are mechanics it is not really different to being a mechanic in the UK apart from it getting properly hot in the workshop.

As mentioned in your other thread consider going fly in / fly out on the mines in WA, you could be a mechanic in their workshops earning 6 figures and working 6 months of the year.

Double check that you can come in, I know you mentioned having family here but what are their relation to you and what is their residency status?

Had a friend working as a standard sales guy for Nissan in Perth. The compound commission sounded the same as the UK, but i am sketchy on details from 3 years ago. I know he was pulling $100k, but also working long hours on Thursdays (i think thursday was long opening) and every saturday morning. Just like any other retail sector.

No sundays though which I figure if you're in the trade is great.

Don't worry about the Ford Falcon or Holden (GM) Commodore, the sales figures are going slowly down the drain.
You will see plenty of Nisans, Toyotas, and other rice burners... also Fiestas, Mondeos, and Daewoos, (GM). Also there are plenty of Euro stuff rattling around, Beemers, Pergots, Tri-Stars, Volvos, Range Rovers, Land Rovers, Skoda, Fiat etc.
Plenty of Chinese/Thai/Malay noodle boxes too!
There are 65 car marks all trying to flog their cars in one of the smallest car markets in the world.
Then there's the upmarket stuff, Rolls, Bentley, Porche, Masararti, and, and, and.....

Most Dealers open 8.30am - 5pm or so during the week, Thursday is the long shopping day here and dealerships will stay open till say 9pm. They also open Saturdays till about 5pm, however they all remain closed Sundays.

Yeah not a mechanic so hopefully a well air conditioned show room would await!
That’s some really good information I’m loving there’s no Sundays as that’s a massive pet hate of mine in the UK at the moment (Sunday = rest day)
A late night once week until 9'oclock is a little steep if starting work at 8:30 but I guess its pros vs. cons.
I have read that the cost of living is slightly higher but that it’s countered by an increase in earnings so that’s really positive to here.
I'm not to sure how your currency converts in uk pounds I earn between £30/£35k a year in the uk so would hope that’s achievable in Australia if not more.
It’s great that Nissan are out there as I think this is the brand to be with so much innovation coming from the designers.

As I haven’t visited Australia before I'm a little confused on location to set up home I have always been drawn to Queensland but my only real reason is the beach so maybe some advice on the hotspots for work/leisure would be nice. I have plans for a big ozzy adventure in the next year or two so I hope I actually like the place.

with regards to my entrance to Australia relatives that currently live there all have citizenship and the relatives range from 1st cousins-3rd cousins, uncles and aunts in total I believe my current family living in Australia is in excess of 50 most of them now being born a true ozzy.

More feedback welcome

If you're over 18 and don't qualify under Skilled Independent I think the family thing is irrelevant as it only gives you points towards a required total, and not many at that.

Marry an Aussie or get a Work Visa.

Those relatives are not close enough to gain you entry.

I cant stress enough that you need to get on the immigration website and see if you can come in and under what visa. It is no good just filling in an app and sending it off if you can not actually get that visa, they will just reject it and you will lose your money.

Milner, have you actually investigated whether you can move to oz or were just having a beer thinking it'd be a fun idea?

I have enough points to make the move I have done more than just dream my topic was more about the motor trade in Australia than my eligibility for a visa

My apologies, I did read it as your entry was based on relationships alone rather than a skills/education basis. My dad lived here but that only gave me something like 15 points out of 110 required IIRC so my misreading prompted the question because family relationships (non-spousal) alone tend to be insufficient for applicants over 18.

Good luck and go for it. Plenty of jobs (in WA and QLD) and can't see one non-emotional reason not to move. That and the fact the women are way hotter her wink

Milner.. The Aussie car market isnt doing too bad at the moment.

Check out the FCAI website (http://www.fcai.com.au/sales) that will give you the VFacts data as to where the most sales are (but it's basically NSW, VIC then QLD) and look at these states for employment, the volume battle has been going on between Ford, Mazda, Toyota for a while now but as previoulsy suggested in the thread VW is a worthy brand to consider as they are in huge growth at present.

Most of the dealer's are owned by large groups and multi-franchised which may help you out? If you are trained on a particular brand (Nissan as you suggest) then this could be an advantage but the spec of vehicles may vary out here compared to the UK?

Give it a go I'd say!
