I'm looking for a stand-alone satnav to use in the UK. However, we're off to Perth next year so it would make sense to buy something that will allow me to use the same system down-under.

Does anyone here use a UK system with Australian maps?

I've used TomTom previously and found it to be great for door-to-door navigation, but I know some systems charge extra for full house number and postcode searching.

So how good are Australian maps at door-to-door navigation?

I've got a TomTom XL .. maps are a bit old though so it's not got a few places.
But does the basics. I've got the maps spare on an SD card if you drop me a line once here.

The car has a Pioneer AVIC thing, and although newer, that's missing a few places too. Maps are rarely updated, so I'll be looking to mod it to get newer maps on.

I've also got TomTom on the iPhone and it gets updated pretty often.

My son and I both have Garmin Nuvii's which seem pretty damn good for door to door.

I recently bought an Australia map from TomTom and it was a bit rubbish, especially on the pacific highway between Brisbane and Sydney. The road has been improved over the last few years but even with bits that were obviously several years old it didn’t know where it was. If they haven’t updated what must be one of the major routes then I guess they will not have updated other stuff either.

I don't know anyone who uses one in Perth that isn't a tourist. They seem to be headunit or mobile phone stuff now days.

Saw a Garmin ad the other day and it was about hill walking and golf.

Another vote for the Nuvii.

As a new transplant, I've used mine in Sydney (mostly), Melbourne, Perth and countryside WA and it's been faultless.

I brought my Tomtom over from the UK, loaded the Australian maps and have had no problems with it.

I brought my TomTom over from the UK, with Australian map downloaded and I haven't had any problems either. My partner, Bob The Planner, also did this and his was good too.

Have been rreading the Choice reviews of the GPS's,
http://www.choice.com.au/

i think it said that both TomTom and NavMan both use the WhearIs maps in Australia so i doubs 1 is going to be better than the other.

had a few hire cars over the last couple of weeks from different suppliers Herze/Thrifty ect. have found that i was getting different routes even when using the same GPS thingy (Herze's Never Lost which i think is a EDIT Not a Garman unit but in fact a navman)

did like the TomTom that Thrifty had.

XR6 was good for skids as well.

Edited on acount of new info after purchace of gps today

just got a tom tom via 180 from dick the theif for $190 today as part of the boxing day sales, 5" screen, hands free blue tooth for the phone. been running around with it this arvo and it seems ok and getting to the right street number - this will be using the latest "whereis" maps that are also used by Garman. Navman use something different.
