Wondering whether I should do in UK before I leave, time permitting.

Cost & time info appreciated.

It'll likely vary between states. For NSW:

Im assuming you are a novice rider? If so, get it in Australia if you are coming over here. Its not hard or expensive to get. If you are not a novice, you can do the accelerated course in the UK, giving you a full licence and then get it transferred to a full licence in Australia. Otherwise you will be restricted for a couple of years.

highly recommend doing the license in the UK prior to coming out.

the process in WA only:-

Apply for a license. to do this you have to pass 15 very odd computer questions - pass mark is around 12 or 13 i think.
this gives you a learners license for a 250cc bike.
This means you can ride a 250cc bike, but also means you have to have a 'shadow' at all times.
(person of >4 years experience riding behind you)

Pass the 250cc test.

this gives you a 250cc license, which means you can ride a 250cc bike, without a shadow.

once at least a year has passed, you can sit the >250cc test that gives you an unrestricted license.

go buy a Fireblade smile

What Redchina said... I got my 250 licence mid last year and rode a Hyosung 250 (which he then bought from me thumbup )

During the year on your 250 licence you can ride an open class bike with a shadow, I bought my SV1000 with a couple of months to go (a bit too tempting in hindsight)

This only applies in WA, and we are going to follow all other states soon where they have a list of "Learner approved motorcycles"

I passed my 'R' class license in WA this year.
As stated already, no matter what your age is, you have to hold your 'RE' license (250cc) for 12 months before you can apply for the unrestricted 'R' class.
I passed the 'RE' and then did nothing for a year. I then did a few more lessons (I think I paid about $65/hr for the lessons) and did my full license test and promptly went out and bought a Yamaha R6!

Lessons are around $65/hr in Perth with slight discounts for block booking a few at a time. The tests are around 20 minutes or so which includes a combination of slow speed turns to demonstrate bike control and general driving.

WTF...Not the thread for it but how much more can the public allow themselves to be handled like this?!

Thanks for the feedback.

Will time permitting get the licence in the Uk.

Not fond of the idea of waiting a year to get on something decent.

It will actually be an improvement, instead of having to ride a 250 for a year the LAMS list includes restricted bikes up to 650cc.

I actually don't think it's such a bad system. Yes a 250 was frustrating at times but I wasn't ready for a litre bike (still taking it easy now)

I would like to see the same system for car licences, to stop 17 YOs getting V8 utes etc...

it makes sense to limit the power to weight ratio of a car that a 17 year old can drive...
instead we have a "no passengers after dark rule" for them,

this government has lost the plot.

We have a 'no v8 or forced induction for P-platers' rule.

It's great, you can have a V12. You can have an R32 but you can't have a TSI, although in fairness I think now they might have a list of exempted turbo cars.

The UK option takes a week and costs around 1k according to the guys at work if you want to fast track to an unrestricted licence.

highlighted by that 17 yr old crashing a Scooby into a family, killing the mother in Maylands two days ago.

awful.

WTF is someone who has had a licence a week doing driving a WRX?? Reminds me of a crash 20something years ago when a 17YO got a new RX7 turbo for his birthday and immediately crashed into a service station in North Perth killing himself.

He also plowed straight on going around a 90 degree corner, he could have done that in a Getz.
