Ok, I've got my head around most of the import restrictions but anyone know if it's possible to import my Westfield kit car (owned for 10 years)which is road registered but is minus an engine and gearbox?

You need to strip it down more than that so you can import it as car parts and not a car.

You need to remove the entire driveline (engine, gearbox, propshaft, diff, half shafts and the wheels..maybe even more than that) before it can be considered parts. Oh and just to throw some extra headaches in, the parts removed MUST arrive on a seperate boat...not just a seperate shipment on the same boat. For a gummymint agency customs and DOTARS are bloody switched on when it comes to putting 2+2 together and they will catch on to you bringing an entire car in even if it is parts.

Once it is all here you can rebuild it but you will still need to jump through all the hoops to get it on the road as an ICV (individually constructed vehicle).

I think a few people have gone this route but personally I am not sure it is worth the effort, you still need to make the thing ADR and ICV compliant which would mean buying parts locally anyway.

Try a search around http://www.ozclubbies.com.au/ as there are expats on there and I think every trick in the book has been tried to get cars in and on the road.

Thanks Deviant. I,d like to fit new running gear anyway and the dash is in pieces too so should be ok. Am registered on Oz Clubbies so will head over there. Value wise it's definitely worth doing as prices here are almost triple the Uk.

As you have owned it for mor that 10 years, and am assuming ex UK then you might be able to get permission to bring it in without stripping is down. Probably need to contact DOTARS and Customs. if you can get approval to bring it in then that is one hurdle jumped, getting it registered will be the next one but there are probably a few options available for that.

would be easier if there was an engine and box in it when you improt it, even if its not a runner as it might give you some flexibility latter when it comes to registering.

Yeah get the thing finished and then bring it as a personal import...as long as you can evidence the owenrship.

no i didnt mean finished, just get someone to put and engine on to the engine mounts and a transmission in the tunnel. wouldnt wory about a prop shaft or any of the plumbing or wirring. just enough that they are able to put an engine number down on the import papers.
