I am quite certain i already know the answer to this but heh ho, worth a try.
My family and i are moving to Queensland in september! I have a job, we have been and looked at houses schools, general stuff and gotten inebriated on the local rum wink

We are back in the UK at the minute sorting everything for emigration and my problem is this:
I have owned my current TVR since october and i would REALLY like to take it with me, however there seem to be a lot of things in my way, i have not owned it for twelve months and i am not horrendously rich......is there a back door? biggrin

TIA

Slim to none.

It is to new for pre-89 import, there is no RAWS for it and you have not owned it for more than 12 months.

If you have got the right race license you could bring it as a race/rally car but you would only be able to drive it to / from an event or workshop...to many rules to go in to but it that is a minefield on its own.

Dont try and fiddle the system or bring it anyway, you WILL lose the car. It will not even get off the dock side...actually I lie...It will get off the dock side on its way to the crusher or when you pay to load it on a boat and send it back to the UK. No joke!

Dont forget that any time spent out of country and away from the car has to be 'made up' to hit the 12 months.

Hijack..

So I also have a job in Sydney, just signed contract, 457 visa being sorted by them....I have had a good read about all the import rules but one thing I am not sure about...

Can I import a pre-1989 car after I have been in Aus a while? Are there any limitations, I think like one a year or something weird?

No limitations as far as I can see.

I've had email discussions with the authorities about this. You can import as many pre '89 cars as often as you like, so long as you follow the rules. Taxes, duties etc.

Not any more I don't think. It's changed to one every 5 years or something. I'll defer to Deviant for his excellent knowledge of all things import.

OP: Yes, that's fine, but you have to get pre-import approval, and my understanding is that if the car is not some freak modified thing you should be fine, subject to some applicable mods on arrival, where necessary.

Personal imports has changed to one in five years but pre-89 has no restriction.

Note that with pre-89 the cut off date is 1st January 1989.

Just having another browse of the pre-89 stuff and I am interested to see how together the hot rod guys are. Not long back DOTARS decided that hot rods are not allowed in under pre-89 as it was bypassing other rulings. Looks like the hot rod crowd were not at all happy and have had the rules changed to allow a rod if it was built pre-89. The jap car and kit car guys have never got themselves together to get things changed in their favour.

No that is for the Personal Import Scheme.

Cut and paste from a very helpful chap at Imports.Vehicle@infrastructure.gov.au

"You can import more then 1 car under the pre 89 scheme, that is fine. You dont need to be a permant resident either to qualify for this scheme. You do not need to have owned them for a period of 12 months.

The 12 month qualifiying period (having owned and registered the vehicle for a period of 12months) is for the personal imports scheme. Under this scheme (personal import) you are only allowed to import 1 vehicle every 5 years. "

Cool! Will bear this in mind.

Looking around at the used car market its a completely different ball game. I curently have a scoob....and they are still looking like good value in Aus. If staying in the uk I was looking at lining up a E46 M3 or something newer like a 370Z or Cayman or something, but looking at prices in Aus I am going to be a bit more restricted....

Worth noting that the car needn't actually have been registered before 1/1/89, only that it had left the manufacturer - that gem is in their documents somewhere.

I think there's somethig in there about major mods having to have been carried out pre '89.
