Export from UK
Discussion
A friend of mine moved to Sydney two years ago and knows that I may be selling my RS4 Avant 07 soon. He has suggested that I export it to Aus and sell there. I am going to Aus in December for one month in December and was going to ship car so I could use for the duration. I have imported cars from Germany/America before and know of the LCT in Aus but wondered if anyone knew of pitfalls and actual costs. (shipping quoted £1100.00)
Your advice would be appreciated.....

You can only import a car in to Australia under a few specific circumstances. Firstly, if you have owned it outside Australia for 12 months (you sounds OK on that) AND if you are moving to Australia permanently and can prove this. (which it sounds like you aren't). Proving it is a points thing - showing you are buying/renting in Aus, enrolling children in schools, have a job - those sort of things. If you are eligible, you still need to pay shipping, import tax and GST (same as VAT).
One other method is through the RAWS scheme, but then it is for a specific set of vehicles which have already been 'approved'. (ie, someone has bought one and smashed it to prove it meets Aus design rules). If your car is on the approved list, then you can pay a RAWS workshop to make the changes to meet Aus design rules. Costs of this depends on the car. A R33 skyline is about $3000 aussie, but a F430 is about $30k (they cost more to smash!!). Your Audi won't be on the list, because they were sold in Aus by Audi, and so nobody would have gone to the trouble of getting it RAWS approved.
The last option is if the car is older than 1989, then it's a 'classic' and the rules are more relaxed. Clearly yours doesn't meet this criteria!
If you want to export the car to Aus, you'll need to move there
ETA: if you are just taking it over temporarily, then that's no problem. You'll need a Carnet de Passage http://www.rac.co.uk/driving-abroad/carnet-de-pass... and just need to pay the return shipping costs. You'll also need to make sure the car is absolutely spotless when you take it to Aus, as quarantine is very strict, and getting it washed over there by Aus Quarantine is expensive. I've driven a UK car out to Aus, so have been through this! To be honest, if you are just going for a month I wouldn't have thought it would be worth the hassle.

Pretty much you have to prove that you have owned the car for a minimum of 12 months. Once you have import approval and the car is exported you then have to register the car in your name in Oz (this has to be done in person). No one else can. Once registered and compliance completed it is then legally allowed on the roads. Once the yellow sticker has arrived from the government you can then sell the car - but this takes a few months. My compliance sticker took around 6 months.
That car will never come in as a RAWS car. It is sold in full volume here (full volume being 400 or more sold here) so absolutely zero chance of it happening.
To come in as a personal import you must have owned and LIVED WITH the car for 12 months. This was introduced to stop people buying a car remotely and also to stop people buying a car on holiday and storing it before having it shipped at a later date.
Here is a handy link to search for cars with a workshop that can carry out compliance under the RAWS scheme: http://raws.infrastructure.gov.au/rawswebpublic/RA...
Nobody is doing Audi at all.
Thank you for your most valuable contribution to the thread. Some very useful information that really addresses the orginial question. 10/10.

Thanks for the info.
Just to clarify, are you saying that there are two criterias.
Criteria is the plural, no need to add an S.Just to clarify, are you saying that there are two criterias.
