Hi All,

Myself and the wife are in the early stages of discussion on this one.

Could do with some real world answers though!

Seen a lot of stuff in mags and on TV as to how good it is - but i need more info to make sure it'll work for us.

Is there anyone on here, preferably in a similar stage of life - i.e. with young children (pre-school age) who wouldn't mind me emailing a few questions over?

Also, anyone with any Oz construction contacts who i could perhaps speak a bit more with about jobs and salaries in my sector?

Any help would be good!

cheers

Not quite at the same stage as you mate but already over here and will have the same things to consider in time.

Whereabouts have you got in mind? Have you been to Australia on holiday at all?

Strange economy over here at the moment, with everything mining and resources related continuing to boom and it seems a lot of other areas slowing if not contracting. Certainly a better and more buoyant place to be than the UK at the moment though.

Worth keeping in mind the shocking GBP to AUD exchange rate though, not good for sending your savings over.

As for salaries, I know Hays have just released their annual salary guide, should be something of relevance in there as they are quite popular for construction in the Sydney market at least - http://www.hays.com.au/salary/salarysurveyrequest.... (No connection to me, just got a mate who works there).

Cheers guys.

Might mail you both separately if that's ok? A lot of questions, probably one word answers but some on here might think they're a bit silly!

aussieal - can you mail me your address please - apparently you don't receive emails from this site.

Yes you will have a kangaroo in your back yard. Yes there are snakes under your bed. Yes the hairy knee screaming tarantula is a real thing and your not a man until you have wrestled one and lost a finger to it.

Someone from PH (I think it was AJG31) went to a meet up with a few people from pomsinoz forums when he was still in Perth....as the name suggest they were very much poms in oz! If I remember the story correctly they sat there drinking beer and complaining bitterly about where they live. They actually complained themselves in to an almighty argument and a physical scuffle!!

To be honest I have never found the expat specific forums to be that great, they seem to be populated by middle aged women who just sit at home all day completely bored and wanting to go back to the UK.

Also be a bit wary of what you read in magazines and see on relocation type TV shows.

I'll second that.

It's mainly women complaining about lack of money, how expensive things are and all the non integrating foreigners in the UK.

These same women who don't work, are looking for cheap Asda ready meal food and living in a suburb that is 95% English.

I'm an Aussie, been in the UK for 20 years and have now been back "home" in Perth for 3 months and loving it.

Just post your Q's up here, everyone can chip in then.

the expat specific forums anywhere are all the same.

  • Expat wife showing off how good her (husband's) expat package is.
  • Where are we doing brunch today?
  • where can i get (X / Y / Z product) from the UK here
  • Aren't the locals revolting
  • etc etc
Having said that, if you wear your bullst deflectors when reading them there is a lot of useful information!

About 15 months in and it's mixed. Wife + two school age children. It's a huge undertaking so I recommend serious thought about it before taking the plunge. As ever it depends on your motivations for moving and what you're looking for. Each city is very different and it's well worth taking time for a visit to see as much as you can.

Happy to answer any questions I can.

Hi I’ve been here 5 months and it’s been a good decision so far, 2 young children (8 & 11) and they are loving it with so much to do, even the wife is now starting to come round after leaving a lot of sisters back in England, its expensive here but I’ve been told that Western Australia is more expensive on the whole but loving it, feel free to email me with any questions

We moved from Teesside to Perth 5 years ago. 2 kids now 10 and 7 and they love it.
We came over to see somewhere new rather than escape from somewhere we didn't like. Great place to raise a family.

Feel free to email me.

Definately true, but under all the expat moaning, there is some useful info.

And I also cant stand the moaning either. If anyone doesnt like it here or anywhere else for that matter, they can always go back.

I wont be going back, thats for sure
