I have plates that could be about ten years old and they are readable but definitely the font is more grey then black. I think it'll be okay for the next MOT but can you polish them like you can a headlight? Never seen any suggestion this is possible but before I order up a set for £25 can they be at least spruced up a bit?

If they are plastic, then yes, t-cut or some cutting compound should improve them.

If it's an ordinary laminated plate and the figures have faded it's probably fit for the bin; if it's the perspex that has gone a bit cloudy it may respond to polishing but it doesn't say much for the UV stability of the plastic and it's likely to go cloudy again quite quickly.

It's not like they are expensive to buy new £10 an end.

If the black of the characters has faded then logic says polishing the clear acrylic in front of them isn't going to fix it.
