Gents I have absolutely no idea so please forgive the question - How much roughly would a full respray cost these days? I appreciate there are many different factors, but in brief: Car is a BMW E34, no colour change required but the paintwork metallic. Front end awful, rest of the car not too bad but isolated spots of failed lacquer. I thought front end respray (wings bonnet bumper) but then that would let the rest of the car down.

As I say many factors at play but it would give me an idea of how many of my pennies I need to save!

I'm looking for someone to paint a project of mine, and there is a massive range of prices and qualities. I talked to someone who had a bare-shell respray on a Fiat 500 recently and that came to around £4k, I know of someone else who paid around £1500 for a decent (though not perfect) respray on an Audi coupe maybe four years ago. Looking on one of the Porsche restoration forums, they seem to be expecting over £10k for a decent respray on a restoration.

No help, I know.

5-10k for quality work , trims off , glass out etc

theres always someone that chimes in that their mate does first class work in a farmyard for less than the price of paint , depends how fussy you are , might get a dust over with cheap paint , trims masked off for under 2k

That's a problem in itself.
Whilst it may be OK to use the old paint - suitably prepared - as the base for a cheaper respray the old paint having adhesion issues is going to require a lot more prep work, which may be best dealt with by taking those panels back to the bare surface & starting again to avoid an unhappy customer coming back saying his new paint is coming off.

Prices will vary from bodyshop to bodyshop & area to area & you would be better asking for recommendations for bodyshops in your local area then taking the car for them to view & quote.

Painting older cars can be problematic. You can potentially still get issues at either end of the price range. Broadly speaking, the cheaper end means you'll probably have to accept snags, 'for the price you pay' whereas the higher end will probably have them covered.

I think it's best to go with the recommendation of someone you know or trust for a more qualified opinion.

so the clear coat peeling , a quality shop that has to warrenty it will insist its rubbed back to bare metal , vs dave on the farm yard will give it and quick sand and paint over it , might last a few years , might fail once its sat in the frost /sun

Gotta say this is spot on. My GF currently has her 350Z in with a very decent place (various awards up on the wall from the last 5 or so years and all sorts, they do insurance work for high-end marques) and along with some rust repairs which involve cutting/welding the rear arches they've quoted exactly in that range for a colour change respray. Obviously not seen the work on her car yet as we literally dropped it off but we've seen examples and it's good.
