I am looking at a 80s 300 ZX and the boot floor looks like this in one corner:

The likely source of water ingress for this is the retractable aerial above.

I am completely new to having welding done on a car, is this a problematic weld? Will it likely have spread somewhere more structural?

Looks like surface rust to me. Can you push your finger through it? does it make cracking noises when you push on it? If not it just needs treating and painting.

It is crispy, I can peel off rust in the very corner. I'd think it is a 3" diameter of pokeable rust in the very corner.

Would you just call it a drain hole and not weld it at all?

Unfortunately if you can see 3 inches of rust chances are when you start cutting back it will be 4 times the size. If the rest of the car is worth it then get someone to fix it properly, a good few hundred £'s no doubt. If the rest of the car is not to a standard you will be happy with find another. Generally once rust starts to show it will be getting a hold where you cant see.
