I'm thinking about changing my winter wheels - I have a genuine OEM (BMW) set that I got second-hand for a great price, but am not particularly in love with the very plain styling and colour. First preference was also for something darker to hide the winter crud better - but I'm not in the market to buy a brand new set from BMW for £3k+.

There's a place not too far from me with exceptional customer feedback that specialises in refurbishing and powder coating wheels, and they have a couple of sets for my car that I like the look of.

But I'm wondering, would a refurbished & powder coated wheel be any better or worse for winter conditions than a regular, well-kept, OEM alloy? I mean in terms of susceptibility to corrosion, longevity, etc. Will the refurbed wheel be like new (this place takes them down to the bare metal and then powder coats them up again), or is it likely to be missing any layers, sealing, protection etc that you'd get from a factory-prepared wheel?

Obviously I don't want to splurge a few hundred quid on something that looks nicer now, but rubbish after a couple of winters - but at the same time I'd quite like to get something a bit more stylish than what I have now.

(My summer wheels, that the car came with, are diamond cut and so obviously I don't want to let them anywhere near even a hint of salt if I can help it, hence the basic smaller alloys that I jumped on for winter usage).

Should be as good as oem if they do the job properly.
Problems normally come from kerbing and chipping etc allowing the water to get under the coating.

OK, cheers - good to know, thanks. Hopefully I'll get a chance to pay them a visit soon to check them out in person, as before we know it, it'll be late summer or autumn and will need to have the wheels ready to go on!
