Cloudy paint - salvageable?

Hello all!

So, I'm having my E36 convertible into the shop in January for the rusty rear arches to be sorted, and at the same time got a quote to respray the boot lid, which has gone cloudy as you can see in the pic above.

My question is, I don't need it to be perfect, but could this be considerably improved with a machine polish, rather than having to spend £500 on having it resprayed? Or is it beyond salvageable?

I doubt it, why not try a small area by hand?

I took my E46 cab to Chipsaway a few years ago to have a nasty scratch on the boot lid sprayed over. They did a great job and it was far less than £500, but they were doing various chips and bumper scratches too. I doubt it cost more than £150 all in.
