Hi all…

Just hoping I might be able to get a rough idea of cost here. A friend has 2014 Qashqai, the lacquer started crazing on the bonnet and her OH (it genuinely isn’t me!) decided to go at it with T Cut, as a result it currently looks like someone’s attacked it with a gritblaster! It’s metallic black, and I’ve massively improved their day by suggesting it’ll be somewhere nudging £1k to have it rubbed down, prepped and resprayed properly. Am I overestimating that wildly?? I fear not?!

I'd baulk at anything over £500.

i would say £300 to £500 but they wont be getting things like wings blended in for that.

I'm in London and I've been quoted £300 to get a rear wing repainted and blended in along with one of the skirts.

So on that basis a bonnet should be £500 tops.

That’s not quite so bad, then! I was fearful that prepping it and getting the ruined lacquer and all the scratches out might be as much again as the paintjob!

Bit of a curveball, and there are probably issues with these that I've not foreseen) but what about a wrap?

It seems you can colour match them, and a bonnet wrap looks to start from around £125.

I'm thinking out loud with this and have no experience of wrapping cars, just to be clear!
Yeah she did mention that, I don’t know how feasible that might be for matching metallic paint though?!

I paid about £370 for a mate's bonnet respray on a purple Fiesta about 10 years ago. Slipped on ice with my car key and put a big scratch down it!

Always catches me by surprise how much bodywork can cost.

Does it really need a respray? Not just flatting off with 3000 then 5000 grit then mopping?

I’ve brought back some real horror stories from the dead by just flatting it off and starting again. It’s very funny when people see the initial sanding though

My wife's previous car got some nasty scratches across the windscreen pillar thanks to a careless window cleaner with his hose pipe. I wet sanded and then buffed out the scratches completely, but she was quite shocked at the post sanding stage. biggrin We got our windows cleaned for free for the rest of that summer...

I'll have to show my son this thread as I'm currently spraying a second hand white bonnet we got for his (red) car after he had a bump earlier this year. It's cost him about £70 in 'ready for use' 1K primer, paint and clear coat (I can't spray 2k) plus helping me swap the parts over and do some prep. I've already done a pattern part bumper, so that paint wasn't just for the bonnet. I think he's got off quite lightly then. smile

I'm in Sussex and have recently had two separate/independent quotes for a bonnet respray - both were £1k. Both places are approved bodyshops that do work for local main dealers and insurance companies; I'm sure I could probably go a little more 'backstreet' and shave a couple of hundred off.

£1k for a proper job would seem to be about right.

has he gone through the basecoat, or just taken off the clear?
if it is flatted maybe risk a quick degrease and shoot a clear coat over -the risk being paint reaction between existing clearcoat- if the basecoat is sound?

Black sounds an easy colour but it isn't at all easy to match, lots of different blacks. then it is metallic.

If you know of a local small body shop and , perhaps, have a few cars in the extended family ‘ stable’ which will inevitably acquire scrapes and minor scuffs, it will pay you to get to know them and make it clear that you are paying in cash, sans paperwork. Mutual benefit and if you then send them referrals, you will be well treated next time you scuff a plastic corner. Also, as the car in question is a 2014, you do not need as new insurance repairs on the new equivalent, but something which will take the eye away from the damage/ incompetent bodge.

In response to the ‘how bad is it’ questions, here’s a slightly iffy pic of said damage.

Back to bare metal & start again.
The OP says the clearcoat has crazed & there's little point messing about with it.
I do wonder if it's had paint before.

Needs to take it to local bodyshops to get a proper quote.

Friend says it’s the only panel on the car affected, I’ve never noticed it as a common issue on this era Nissans (2014)?

Per paintman's post it's possible it's been resprayed badly in the past. I would have that back to bare metal and resprayed, it'll need blending into the wings as well. Or if the owner's not precious, see if you can find a matching one from a breaker or eBay etc and hope the colour is close.

We had a low mileage 2009 Nissan Note back in the day. It was a goldie/ silver colour and we owned it for almost ten years. The lacquer on the bonnet crazed on that too.... Every other panel was unaffected. So not unique to your friend's car

Puzzled me somewhat, but I never did anything about it, as it was just my wife's run around.
