Simple one this… what should I be using to paint wiper arms? 2007 car very faded and in some places the paint has burned through, presumably from the sun.

Primer, undercoat and laquer? Do I need to sand? Or will a simple one stage paint suffice? If a Hammerite spray can can do everything, I am fine with that.

Would prefer a gloss finish, like factory.

Shopping at Halfords…

Life's too short: just replace them with new.

By the time you've paid Halfrauds prices for the materials you'll need, you'll end up spending more than the cost of a new wiper arm, anyway.

Sandpaper, primer and satin black would do it. Halfords paints are actually pretty good so if they're cheaper than Hammerite then don't be afraid to use them. If you're not that concerned with looks then a cheap tin of black Hammerite and a paintbrush will tart them up even quicker and look fine from 10ft.

Semi gloss/satin black which doesn't require a primer coat. Sand off any rough/corroded bits first.

Generally just sand off the rust and use any black rattlecan paint, will be good for a couple of years. No matter what you do it won't last forever as the sharp edges don't take paint very well so don't bother. If I have any to hand would use undercoat too but no sleep lost. The sanding and cleaning / degreasing with possibly cellulose thinners is the most important bit.

Seconded. Just done this on my van and primer and paint £14 but a new replacement was £22.

I sprayed the rusty arms on my old Shogun with red hammerite direct to metal paint. Minimal prep beforehand - literally just rubbed them down with kitchen roll to get the surface crap off.

They're fine, might need to be done again in a couple of years but it's no hardship

Thanks guys.

I should have said, they aren’t rusty at all, just very faded. Does that make a difference?

Scotch pad and satin black as suggested.
I've had good results with Simoniz rattle can paint but in reality any will do.

I understand the point here, but....you'll have spare primer/paint etc for the next job that needs it, so count the spend as an investment! biggrin No way you'll use an entire can of either for a set of wiper blades.

Do my own with a scotchpad & aerosol satin black.
Doesn't take long even if you need to do it annually.

My Jag ones had some Ali blisters coming through from stone chips.
I did both suggestions above. Bought a second hand like new pair from eBay for £60 and reconditioned my own ones to sell for £50 or £60.

Look on Amazon for Steyer rattle cans. The satin black sprays really nicely with a great nozzle for good application.

Dagenham, Darren, Tracy, sunstrip, fluffy dice, Ghia, The 1980s called.

Please feel free to re-arrange to make a sentence that works for you. Broadly I would be happy with any of the possible combinations.

Have you tried some polish/t-cut type stuff?

None of those things last in my experience.

So, I had a go with Hammerite smooth black earlier. I had a look in the cupboard and had a spray can kicking around so decided to use that. Wiped down the arms but did not sand.

Overall after 4 coats I would say I got a good result. Not quite smooth, the paint has gone down a little rough (either because I didn’t sand or because that is how Hammerite ‘smooth…’ goes down) but looks good either way and miles better.

Easy!
