Just noticed I have several patches of lacquer peel on the roof of my hard top mx5, I normally cover it in winter but didn’t this year due to so many horror stories about covers damaging paint, so what causes the peel and is a re spray the only option for correction ??

I had this on a Mk5 Golf when it sat through covid, i can only assume the combination of moisture and sun baking it was responsible.
Maybe poor previous paint job, could be any number of factors.
A proper repaint is the solution.

needs a repaint theres no cheap fix

seems common on red cars anyway , can be just due to poor quality paint /age

I would agree that it appears to be more a red car thing, as the only car I had it with was red. It needed respraying..

Adhesion issue between the clear & the basecoat.
Strip & repaint.
To minimise the chance of recurrence back to bare metal may be the best option.

Many causes, reds do seem to be common, but I've seen it on green & blue metallics. Vauxhall had a big issue with a light metallic blue some years ago.
