I've been looking at an old 1970's car, it was resprayed a couple of years ago but it was done badly. There is significant orange peel and a few runs.

I can't imagine that I'd have time, or if I did, I'd run out of patience to sand it flat. I have done it a few decades ago with a TR7 and a couple of Minis. Don't have the inclination now but I have the money to pay someone else to do it properly.

What do you reckon would be a rough estimate for a bodyshop to flat it down and respray? In terms of finish it doesn't need a £20,000 15 layer mega-finish, it just needs to look better than it does now. So a basic job would do.

For an idea on size, Rover P6, which seems to be smaller these days compared to when I used to be a sprog sat in the back of one without seatbelts.

Last year I got a quote from a back street sort of place for sanding and repainting a Mitsubishi GTO and it was around £3k.

It is worth finding out what it was painted with. I can't remember exactly what the situation was but I remember a friend having an amateur paint job re-done professionally and all the old paint had to be removed or else the new stuff would react with it. IIRC it had been painted with cellulose? Big job. Much bigger than simply flatting down the old paint and overpainting it..

Around £3k I'd say.

if i was the bodyshop id be reluctant to take it on , if the previous shop didnt have the skills to do a semi decent job then you can assume the prep and rust repairs are of a similar standard , then new shop gives it a quick whizz over and suddenly any issues down the road are now their problem

Id be spending over 1500 on materials just for a quick blow over job so 3k would be way off nowdays.

If you could get away with a scuff and repaint on the Op car with no warranty as theres no telling of any issues under the original repaint Id be wanting 5-6k minimum depending on colour etc as theres alot of variance in paint costs

The best thing to do would be let someone have a look, they may be able to salvage the current paint with a couple of days flatting and polishing??

Many thanks for the answers, around £3k is what I had in mind but I also thought that realistically these days my reckoning is way off and it's more likely to be nearer £6k.

The car would need to be extremely cheap or be some kind of rarity (which it isn't) to allow for that kind of paintjob. It sounds like it would make more sense to find one which has some "honest" old paint rather than something which has evidence of shoddy filler in places and sprayed over with such a bad finish over the whole car.

I'd be surprised if it was previously done by an actual bodyshop, more like an amateur attempt by someone who thought they could do it.

Let's put it this way, I've sprayed a car before and it came out better than this one I looked at - and I know nothing but it didn't matter as it was just a snotter. It was the first and only time I've done it. Makes you wonder about what might be hidden away on the rest of the car.

I appreciate materials have gone up but how much would you be paying for paint for an average sized car in a common colour?
Just curious really.

How longs a piece of string??

For good quality materials( middle of the market) it would be over 1500 quid for primer, base and clear, plus sanding discs etc for prep.

Buying cheap stuff you can probably do it for less than 500 quid but youre wasting your time doing it with that sort of product

Try calling TSK near Sevenoaks. Wont be cheap but they will do a good job if they take it on.
They know a lot about classics and are well known in the classic car community. As you are not far might be best to call in one day with it - I find a lot of places wont take stuff on over the phone anyway.
