Some people just use normal clearcoat which seems to work as it stops/slows the surface from oxidising.

I think the choices are:
1. Car wax/polish;
2. Clearcoat as already mentioned;
3. The sealing part of a restoration kit (not all of them come with this - the cheapest is probably the Turtle Wax kit https://www.turtlewax.co.uk/products/speed-headlig...
After having restored one of my headlights, I'm going to try using this, both as a general wax/polish and for my headlights: https://www.turtlewax.co.uk/products/hybrid-soluti... which gets a good review from vikingaero on https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&... . I'm of the "don't clutter up your house with expensive bottles of stuff that you only use once" school though, whereas you may think differently.

Thanks. Clear coat has been mentioned a couple of times. What's that? I associate it with the final layer when painting but I assume it's not this.
I think it is that - there are some listed on the Amazon page linked to above.Car Plan No1 Super Gloss.
It goes on in seconds, i do the headlights every couple of months, have also applied it to the whole body which took probably 20 mins start to finish, beads like a full wax job.
Member of another forum who lives in Cyprus recommended it, if it can protect paint/lights in that heat/sun it should be fine here, cheap too.
