Glass Etching Removal

I have a quarter glass that has had a registration etched into it at some point in its life. Does anyone know if this can be removed?

Its not very noticeable in the picture but in person it really stands out.

A previous car of mine had those, and they did not line up with the number plate on the car (exported, re-imported, then sold to us)

I would say it is near impossible to remove them and return the glass to clear, how about masking off a small rectangle, and sand blasting the glass. Yes, you will have an etched rectangle, but you wont be able to see the previous reg.
