Saggy Jag Headlining
Discussion
A lot of my 2004 Jag XJ8 headlining fell down after last year's hot summer, in the space of a week or two. I'm looking a fix that doesn't involve replacing the headling, as that, on these cars, need removal of the rear screen, which sounds very expensive. No sunroof
The little pigtail pins some people look gash.
I'm not sure what the backing is on the Jag headling material, whether its foam, but it feels pretty thin. I don't think the car is so old or has been exposed to the continual extreme climates like I see in those Aussie and American youtube videos.
I'm thinking of two approaches:
1. Steamer and roller. Read about this in a few places. Seems to have mixed results. The idea is the heat and vapour softens the glue, making it sticky. Effectiveness improved if a few staples, pins used (which can be removed later) to hold the cloth up, which the glue dries. I have one of those wallpaper steamers that you hold flat against a wall.
2. Glue and syringe needle. Came across this video:

Anyone tried anything like this?

Common cause of that is the foam backing of the headlining material.
It fails - stays stuck to the backing board - & the material sags down from the foam backing giving you the Bedouin tent effect.
Very common on Classic Range Rovers, so much so I'd say it was normal!
Had it on mine - a 1986 which I've had since 1994.
Twice - once with the original & once with the NationWide Trim one I bought to replace it.
That's twice in just over 20 years in my ownership
Subject used to crop up frequently on Land Rover forums.
Various methods have been tried by various people - including stapling, pins, the pigtaily pins you speak of & various glues. None with much success.
One chap with a Disco just scraped it all off & painted the backing boards.
The original backing board on mine was a sort of cardboard type stuff, the NW one is thin GRP.
Only method was to remove the complete thing, remove ALL the foam from the backing board & glue new material on.
This company supply kits for the Range Rover incl the necessary high temperature tolerant adhesive.
Used them for mine when I had to do the NW one (same foam failure).

Just had a quick browse & they do a kit for Jaguars so looks like there may be a common problem.

Had a similar problem with an XK8, which requires the seat to be removed to replace the headling. In the end I took it to a place in Kent called Headliner World who fitted a new headlining.
They also supply a grp backed, colour matched headling for Jaguars, that you fit yourself. If you google them it takes you to their ebay page which has product and contact details.
