Morning all smile

It must be 25 years since I did any spraying, times change & I am sure most of the products I used are now gone (cellulose and synthetic).

I have a project that I want to paint, can't do it in a heated building but have an open barn to use. I have done a few smaller parts with rattle cans & got half decent results (good enough), but think I could do better with a cheap spraygun as I have the compressor, regulator etc.

Can I use acrylic ? Is anti-bloom thinners available for acylic ? Can it be flattened with 1200 / soap / G3 afterwards ??

Is there a better option ?? I can't go down the 2 pack route as I don't have air-fed masks.

-> send it to the professionals ......... nice idea but cost is too much of an issue, it's not a E-type jag smile

Appreciate any ideas or advice, thanks.

Before you go down the spray gun route, consider using bigger cans. My local auto paint suppliers do big cans and I use them fairly regularly. Successfully, I mean.

The bloom might be the paint's too thick. More thin coats might beat that.

Cheers Dicky,

I have bought one of the large cans from a local autopaint centre & used it to blow in the small hidden areas. Not sure I want to do all of it with rattlers - it's quite a big lump to paint !!

Roof in blue, everything from door handles to gutter in white ............ it might take me forever with cans

ah! interesting, thank you. i just assumed these were now off the market due to all the water based stuff - obviously not smile

I was never much of a painter but always liked the synthetic stuff, cheap & cheerful & always looked half decent (would suit this job too).

Another option smile I am getting spoilt for choice here. just done a quick search & it seems to be priced ok, and can be sprayed (spray is a term loosely used for my attempts to eject it from a spraygun smile )

Thanks Dave

I'm sure someone will be along in a minute with better advice than mine. I switched for cellulose (a long time ago), and I do panels with 2 pack acrylic

I was a little wary when everyone says you can't sand it etc, but I used it the same as I ever did and found no real difference. I often flatten the paint after, and then spray a clear coat. It looks fine to me.

I don't know who 'everyone' is because there's no issue sanding 2k or flatting and polishing 2k

It was more a question than a recommendation hehe don’t blame me if it goes tits up biggrin

I keep toying with the idea of repainting my MX5 with it rather than having a proper respray, but I’m too chicken.

PS - need more pics/info on the truck too please wink

OK Dave, 2 problems solved in one, drop your MX5 here, let me catapult some sticky coloured stuff at it & we can then decide if it's good enough for my truck smilesmilesmilesmilesmile

Truck was bought as a "toy". I do not have the money or the skills to "restore" it, so it's a tart up job to make it presentable to roll around a few steam rallies. Only bought it 3 weeks ago, removed the airkit, started to sand the cab, quick scrape and paint on the chassis until after the shows next year. A couple of pics (don't want to get slapped legs for posting irrelevant crap in the wrong forum).

This was before we removed the airkit & started to attack the roof....

Pretty much as it is so far ...

Agree on flattening 2k, never used it but used to have a unit beside a very good painter, seen him flatten it plenty of times.

i don't want to risk using that stuff, no airfed mask, 60+ year old lungs that were polluted by benson & hedges, cellulose, and synthetic for many years !!

Our toys are the same colour, but yours is bigger than mine, and less rusty thumbup

I’ve got a bit of a thing for old ERF/DAF/Foden/SA from the 80s. If only I had the space.

Any chance of a project thread?

I am doing the hard wearing parts of my lorry in raptor liner. It is really, really tough and so easy to apply with a Schultz type gun. You can get a brilliant stippled finish that would be great on the roof as that gets hit by branches a lot.

Never seen that product Caddyshack, I doubt it will hit many branches, the airkit isn't being refitted, so it's only about 3m tall. Likely to do only a few hundred miles a year too

our toys won't be the same colour soon Dave, this one is hopefully going to end up blue & white smile If my plastic cab rusts, I am in trouble, the chassis is well flaky but that's been knocked back & painted for this coming year.

I was always a big Volvo / Scania fan, way ahead of the British stuff, but drove a lot of them in the 90's & the shows are littered with Scanias dripping in lights & chrome (look nice but it's a bling competition).

I visited a few shows this year & theres a lot of interest in basic stuff done to look like a half decent work tool - that's my aim, working within the limits of cost and skills. This one is June '98 registered, so 25 yrs old (considered classic) in June 23 - just right for me smile

Space - I rented work units from a guy for years in the late 80/90's, called him & he offered me this barn for "not a lot" smile

Project thread - not sure if it would interest anybody here, I am grabbing pics as I do jobs, so maybe a timeline thread when it's ready to use next spring / summer ?
