Getting stone chips out of glass headlights
Discussion
Just in the last part of restoring my Escort Cosworth.
Pulled the headlights out to clean up and fit them, the lenses which are glass have a stone chipped / sand blasted look about them.
Has anyone got any experience in cutting these marks out them ? if so what method did you use ?
My only experience is 30 years ago with a kit brought from Frost which had an attachment for the drill and some pink powder you mixed with water, this was on a old Mk2 Cortina screen and it did bugger all !

You can still buy those kits on amazon, I think its cerium oxide and usually a felt pad. Fine for light wiper marring on a windscreen but won’t do anything for chips or serious issues.
Depending how bad they are you might need to sand and the restore if new glass isn’t the option.
There are no chips or cracks, just a "blasted" look, will 100% need a cut back of some sorts Depending how bad they are you might need to sand and the restore if new glass isn’t the option.
I have used cerium oxide many times to remove some light scratches from glass and mirror. It takes patience to see the results but is definitely a proper product for light scratches.
Some time back I needed to remove fairly deep scratches and was directed to a couple of glass abrasives to use prior to cerium oxide. The coarse grits removed the deeper scratches...the cerium oxide renewed the clear polish of the glass.
A felt pad and water used with a cordless drill will do it. Definitely will remove scratches that could be felt with your finger nail running across the surface.
