will paint correction fix this, or will it need a respray?

I know this sounds stupid but I've fixed etching from bird droppings with a hairdryer. If you can't feel anything on the top of the clearcoat (ie. it's clean and the damage is in the clear coat) then try using a hairdryer 1-2cm above it and keep the hairdryer moving around and you should find the marks go or are at least significantly reduced. Worth a try before coughing up for a respray anyway imo and it worked for me.
Edit: here's the post from Detailing World that convinced me to give it a try: https://www.detailingworld.co.uk/threads/bird-poo-...
The damage to my car and the results I achieved were similar to that in the Detailing World pics.

No worries - I doubt a hairdryer would get hot enough to do any damage but take it slowly and methodically etc. working closer to the panel until the marring reduces. It's not perfect but it was a 95% improvement on my car, to the point where you'd have to be really looking very closely to see anything.
