Looking for ideas on what works and what doesn't for a reasonable job of detailing.

I know that proper detailing takes a lot of time but I would think that a lot of that is diminishing returns the more effort you make. Can you get 80% of a result from say 20% of the effort?

I've been pretty accustomed to Autoglym stuff but I find that the shampoo is pretty poor and SRP is ok, but there must be better out there at a similar price point.

I'm considering buying a cheap DA polisher and having a go of machining the paintwork. I've got an old motor to practice on first.

Id be really interested in hearing of products that won't break the bank which do a really good job despite the price.

A DA would be good but they can be quite time consuming to do it properly.
I quite like Scholl S20 black 1 step compound, not really that cheap but a 1 litre bottle has been on my shelf a few years now and I’ve done a few cars with it.
I also use a spray on protection product called Sigma from Garage Therapy which is excellent but there are lots of good ones out there.
I’m a bit of a Garage Therapy fanboy at the moment but in all reality the stuff from the likes of Autoglym and Meguiars at Halfords will do just as good a job.

General rule of thumb.

"Quick, cheap, good". You can pick any two of the three.

From a normal wash and maintenance perspective then I find Infinity Wax products offer the best results for the time and money I invest. Their Turbo 6 topped with their spray on QD for maintenance is amazing. It also helps the QD does a great job of reducing water marks after drying.

They don’t do a correction polish really so if time is an issue I would go with something that fills but work on getting the best decontamination as possible before it so as the base you are working from is as good as possible.
