Did my first 2-stage detailing on the wife's F-Pace yesterday and was really chuffed with the result but noticed this for the first time on the front wing:

I was hoping it was some soft sticky stuff but the clay bar wouldn't touch it, nor the medium cutting compound. I suspect its either a resin or varnish but it's set hard whatever it is. Is there any chemical I can use that won't impact the underlying and surrounding paintwork ? Or is it a professional mechanical job with wet & dry ? The car is metallic black.

The first thing I'd try is a razor blade or glass scraper.

you need to know what it is before you can safely attempt to remove it.

is it set hard like glass, or stiff like dried glue?

can you get a stanley blade under it to slice it off? Does it react to heat/water?

I'm not sure what it is but its set hard. I did consider a scalpel but don't want to do any damage to the base paintwork. I haven't tried softening it yet, that's a good shout although if it is some form of paint I don't suppose that will work.

try some cellulose thinners on a cotton bud , if its touch up paint it will come straight off

if you think its had a smart /bodged repair on that panel DONT use thinners on , wont touch orig or quality paint jobs though

Plastic blade razor not a metal one!

Metal one would be a last resort.

Just ordered some, will give that a go. Pretty sure the panel is original, prior to us for the first 6 months of its life it was a JLR head office promo car so if it did have any work done on that panel, which I doubt, it would have been OEM standard.

Cellulose thinners finally arrived and after an hour plus half a pack of cotton buds I finally managed to get rid of the drip. It has left a tide mark and even a run over with cutting compound won’t shift it so I think it have done some damage to the clear coat which only a mechanical sanding will clear. Still looks 100% better though.

Looks like a run after the panel has been repainted.

Not a repaint, we've owned the car 4 years and it only appeared a couple of weeks ago. I suspect the wife had parked it somewhere someone was doing some varnishing outside. It was a dark brown colour.

I'm probably being picky with the final result, she couldn't see it and I couldn't get a photo that shows it up now to post.

my guess is its a drip by accident ...maybe someone was touching in some damage and mistakenly let a drip of paint fall on it and didnt notice

the celly thinners is a good trick when a blind man has touched in some marks , you can wipe it all off and do a neater job
