Last week I took the Bentley into a new local valeting service. The courtesy and civility was beyond compare. Doors were opened for me, I was shown into a comfortable lounge equipped with leather armchairs, tea and coffee were served, and magazines provided. Jokingly I said "What, no biscuits ? ", and a boy was sent next door to Waitrose to get some.

They lavished time and effort on the Bentley. It cost me fifteen quid and was worth every penny.

Yesterday I went back again with my Alfa Romeo. I was shouted at me in a language I couldn't even identify, let alone understand. They didn't understand a word I said even when
I said " Wash and wax " which must be the phrase they hear a thousand times a day .
They banged on the roof of the car and pointed when I was required to move the Alfa from one place to another, which required me to thread through a maze of hoses, pipes, whirling bodies and moving equipment, all the while in a steamed up car covered with soapy water.
Nary a hint of coffee, tea let alone a chocolate digestive.......and they tried to charge me twenty quid. The Bentley was washed by an all male team, the Alfa by a bunch of women....the men were prettier. Should in future I only go on those days the men are working ?
