i noticed a honda civic in maxpower which had its whole boot smoothed and a pair of lights fitted inside the rear window. i found something similar on www.s-v-c.co.uk (go to more lights and there the 16th set down- 1252 REAR LAMP 4 5/8" DIA)
i wondered if i was to fit these to a standard hatchback, whether it would pass the mot.
cheers

Those are a vintage style and I can think of far nicer ones to use but it's your car.
Anyway that's not the point.
The lights have to function, be the right colours and be in the right position.
You will have to go and find a copy of the construction and use regulations to ensure you position them within the required height range and they must not be too far in from the outside of the vehicle. Although it will not be stated in the regs I suspect it would fail MOT if the light was visible inside the car ie reflecting back of the glass.
You may find the info you require in the SVA regulations which apply to Kitcars. The Kitcar forum has a sticky link to them.
