A colleague just bought a car from Arnold Clark and has noticed the rear tyres are cracked around their circumference in the main tread.

Is this enough to be a concern? The tyres are 5 year old Hankooks.

It would concern me enough to want them replaced.

My policy for all safety-critical components is that whenever there's any doubt, there's no doubt.

Cheers.

Had a nosey at the MOT history there and they were both an advisory 2 weeks ago. Not sure if that might help her with any comeback but being Arnold Clark I'm sceptical.

I'd be having a frank conversation with them about it.
They aren't renowned for their sterling customer service though.

Yep, they'll likely tell you to jog on as "it passed an MOT with them on"

You might be able to help your case by sending your pictures to customer support for a couple of well-known tyre brands and asking how soon these tyres should be replaced. (I'd expect them to clutch their pearls and tell you to buy some new tyres from them right away.)

If the selling dealer does agree to replace make sure its not wiith Double Happines or whatever other cheap Chinese make they can get for threepence ha'penny apiece.

Pity they weren't noted, and vehicle refused, before accepting the vehicle.
and yes i'd be replacing them in very short order.

The tyres are about as 'fine' as any five year old tyre, i.e. they are not long due for replacement.

Circumferential cracking in the tread grooves not a safety issue.
