Mondeo 2008 brake squeal
Discussion
Hi all Son just purchased and now uncovering issues. 2008 petrol 2.0 ghia. When you first start off no issues at all. However after a few slowing down events you get an annoying squeak/squeel that is apparent at low speed even if you are not braking. Can also reproduce if you lightly press the brake whilst going along. Video attached. Anyone got any ideas please?https://drive.google.com/file/d/18x5w3ZlRDyLRsmWYZLOeuc-6ZdMl--F6/view?usp=drivesdk
Fixing brake squeal seems to be more of an art than a science. Essentially you need to change the resonance characteristics of the caliper assembly until it stops resonating. Some techniques I'd used in the past:
- strip, clean and grease the caliper including the slider.
- put an anti-squeal shim behind the pad.
- remove the anti-squeal shim
- taper the leading and trailing edges of the pads
- replace the pads
- replace the rotors

just purchased
If it's from a dealer/trader, take the car back.If it's a private purchase get the brakes fully checked/overhauled. My money's on a cheap DIY brake replacement that was either too cheap (poor quality materials) or something wasn't done right.
Brakes do love to squeal and the manufacturers put quite a bit of effort into avoiding it. Best way to get rid of brake squeal is to buy parts from an official dealer.
Thanks all, pads are motorcraft. Will have another go with the fixes mentioned. Just as a bit of an update car had sat for around a year so maybe that is something to do with it. Was a private sale from someone who purchased it from an old guy I think had cherished it but stopped driving it. Tks
