100% they need changed.
Thought as much. Will be getting some Michelin Crossclimates in that case.SkodaIan said:
What make are the tyres - something you've heard of or ditchfinders?
That's a lot of cracking on a 5 year old tyre - 2018 manufacture date so quite possibly only been on a car 3-4 years.
I've had tyres significantly older than that which had no cracks at all.
Continental Eco Contact 5. Been on car since new. That's a lot of cracking on a 5 year old tyre - 2018 manufacture date so quite possibly only been on a car 3-4 years.

I recon that tyre has spent time relaxing in a sun bed. That's a lot of cracking on a 5 year old tyre - 2018 manufacture date so quite possibly only been on a car 3-4 years.

Bizarre level of damage for 5 years old.
If not worn out 5 years seems the be the useable life of a tyre now due to side wall cracks or tread distortion. I hear various reasons but the main ones are heat damage from direct sunlight, damage from road salt being left on and damage from car wash wheel cleaners.
Either way its all the brands that seem to do it.

I have the same conti's on my sons Skoda and they are perished and 6 years old. I have been searching, as fit the same tyres if needed. These are the rears and have plenty of treat . The contis used to be £70 ish a tyre a couple of years back when I changed the fronts as worn. Now they are £110 each, which is quite a hike. They are only 185 55 R15's but even Toyos and the likes are the same as the conti's from 2 years back.
From speaking to my tyre guy, he asaid that they are using less oils in rubber manufacture which causes tyres to dry out quicker and perish.
We bought a 1 year old car, 6k miles, with Bridgestone Potenzas and they were showing cracking between the tread, which is why i asked him. He seemed to think it was normal in tyres now. I said about UV damage as was on the outer edge of the tyres. Luckily the dealer I bought the car from wasnt sure on the cracking and supplied 4 replacement tyres .

My Goodyear tyres are all 5yrs old now and still look utterly fine in this regard.
Car outside. Tyres treated like crap. Occasional car, driven spiritedly fairly often.
One has a big gouge on rim protection. Rears nearly bald.
Due to replace for autumn and MOT, but it’s definitely not UV/cracking damage that’s led to their demise.
Indeed sans the gouge on the front, and no desire to change to different tyre type, I’d have just replaced the rears and kept the fronts for another 5 years!

Surprised that a premium tyre would crack like this so quickly. I had a set of Avon tyres fitted to my shed and they had all cracked along the tread within 3 years and got advisories on every single tyre last time it was MOTd. This is a car that spent a large amount if this time parked in an underground damage so it cannot be sun damage.Gassing Station | Suspension, Brakes & Tyres | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
