My golf came with Marseille 18 inch alloys with ET51 offset (stolen under prev owner). I bought some 16inch wheels from an e golf with ET46 rating and apparently they don't fit. Can anyone offer any advice i need to buy some alloys that fit but do i have to get ET51 or is there a margin of tolerance. Really never knew id find it this difficult.

ET means offset, how much backspace there is and how far the wheels sticks out. It is worked out in mm from the centreline of rim to the naive plate mounting face.

Well worth your time reading up on it and finding out what the stock ET would be for your car. You'll then become 'informed' and will easily be able to answers these questions for yourself. As well as aid you in future rim purchases. smile

Try this site for playing around with some possible sizing choices. It’s possible you might actually want to use a different offset if going for another wheel size

Thankyou, as i say the stock ET was 51 I've read up and everything suggested the ET46 would fit but even after asking people in the know etc i still mustn't understand cos they don't fit. I've had conversations with tyre fitters and I'm not sure they fully understood.

The new rims would stick out 5mm more. That wouldn’t stop them fitting so there must be another reason

That's my suspicion, everything suggests they should fit. The tyre fitter said he could probably bray them on but it wouldn't be a good idea.

It also depends on the rim width too. If you go wider or narrower you may need a different offset to prevent rubbing and/or keep the tyre in the correct place.

Handy site to visulaise.

Rims also need the correct PCD (pitch circle diameter), number of studs and the space between them.

You also need to correct centre bore so that rim sits correctly on the hub.

If they are OEM rims these should be fine, so long as they came from the correct vehicle. If aftermarket you need to check carefully for the correct fitment.

If you have big brakes (performance car maybe). You will need clearance for them, smaller rims may foul the brake callipers.

This! The fitter showed me and it was the bore that was like 1mm too small but he said to me it was the ET so i think he's confused me. The wheel has a shamfer which wouldn't quite sit on the hub. I believe the alloys I've bought are OEM but they are from a full electric golf. Thanks for helping i may have been going down the wrong rabbit hole.

It might help if you say which year/model you have and what year car the 16" wheels came from, though from what I've seen the recent ones are all 57.1mm centre bore (CB).

As you've already seen, there are numerous factors that will determine whether the wheel/tyre combination will fit correctly.

I've got a mk7 2018 Golf GTE and although i didn't see the car apparently the 16 inch wheels i bought came from a 2018 golf e.

The above photo is the alloys i bought, its a long story but the 18 inch marseille alloys that should have been on the car were somehow removed. I then bought the car from cazoo and compensation was agreed as it was advertised as having alloys.

That would make sense, he's just told you the wrong parameter is incorrect!

Sell them on and find some different ones.

I went through this pain looking for a second set of wheels for winter tyres and found a whole load of variables I’d never knew existed. In the end I got some Braid wheels made to the exact spec of OEM rims (via MacG racing in the UK). Takes a few weeks to arrive from Spain but they’re good wheels and a perfect fit.
