I’ve always understood that if a nail is in the tread of the tire and it’s nowhere near the sidewall then it can be repaired. Are there any exceptions to this or have I got it wrong?

There's a specific standard to follow, http://www.btmauk.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/M... and note the "secondary damage" part - lots of tyres are unsuitable due to these.

However, not everyone is -willing- to make repairs for their own reasons.

It depends.

Punctured tyres can suffer additional damage to the sidewall if they've been "driven flat". On a conventional tyre that damage can be seen once the tyre is off the wheel and a repair/no repair decision can be made.

Runflat tyres have very stiff sidewalls and if they've been "driven flat" either too fast or for too long there may be sidewall damage that doesn't show - because the sidewall is so tough. For this reason a lot of places won't repair runflats.

Arguably there's no point repairing any tyre at, say, 2mm

Thanks for that fellas! From the video I’ve seen I’m fairly sure my nearly new tyres on my motability vechicle could have been repaired.
Since it’s a motability vechicle I don’t pay a penny extra but I do think they replaed the tyre (at £200) because it was easier and they could.
If I had been paying in the bill then I probably would’ve queried it a bit further!
