Noticed a couple of my front two tyres have hairline cracks (around and inside the treads)

What your reckon?

Tyres are date stamped 13/17...about 5mm left on both so plenty of meat.

Some of the cheapest, nastiest tyres money can buy. Hardly surprising they deteriorating prematurely. Treat yourself to a set of midrange Hankooks or similar.

I know that when I aquired the car they were a really odd brand, with the tread on them I thought I would run them a little longer...they feel ok in the wet, but is the cracking a concern?

Notwithstanding that the tyres are indeed a crap brand, I wouldn’t be too bothered about these surface cracks.

It’s the deeper ones between the tread rows that are a bit more concerning, if you have them.

I had the same issue with Avon Zx rain tyres (not cheap)

For whatever reason there was a certain batch that suffered from cracking.

My MOT guy said as long as the casing wasnt visable in between the tread blocks they would not fail the MOT.

Plenty of cars run far worse tyres than that for years without failure. It really comes down to how risk averse you are; if you're happy with the performance, I'd probably just keep a careful eye on them to see if they're getting worse.

Yeah they are superficial looking at them, just wanted some advice. Ha, they are a crap brand having just googled them "Saferich".

I have been rather happy with them to be honest though and I am a bit of a tyre snob.

I will run them a little longer now the weather seems to be improving, and hopefully get up to October when I will stick my winter 16's on, but will keep my eye on them.

Ive seen some of the most expensive tyres out there crack like so its not really anything to do with st tyres. As long as you cant see any visable exposed cords showing through its fine to use.

Hairline cracks like that are fine, get your use out of them.
Even premium tyres will do that, I've got Goodyear on the front of our site runabout Fiesta ST and they've not got any worse over 3 years..

Cool, I will get my use out of these, tbh reading about under inflation could be the cause of this, manufacturer recommend 39/40psi on these for the 9-3 - so imagine over time previous owners don't check and run them low.

Avon claimed it was the effects of the sun's UV.. and in fairness, although all 4 tyres were effected it was the side that generally sat in the sun that had the worse cracks.

I thought that sun UV was the reason for the ‘6-year limit’. Not 3 years!

Yes, to avoid this I only ever drive in the dark!

The only tyres I’ve had do this are Michelin. Goodyear Eagle F1 that are a few years old still look new. BF Goodrich which are close to their age limit haven’t done this and the Pirellis only last 5 minutes so it’s never been an issue with them.

UV, sitting around and incorrect pressures will all have an impact on the tyre.

Ultimately the cracking is minor as said above. You may find that some brands are worse due to the tyre compounds used.
