Ok, so the Vitesse is going to need its bottom steering joint replaced before I take it for the MOT & I'm also going to change the rack mounts for alloy ones. Can anyone tell Me how big a job it is? Looks like the engine is going to have to be lifted up at the front to get to the bottom joint. Time is not on my side at weekends at the moment now that the cricket season has started so I am looking to get someone in to do it. Anyone any idea how much a garage will charge to change these items? I have the parts already so would only be paying labour. Also does anyone know of any mobile mechanics in the Huddersfield area who are clued up on classics?

Cheers

Not difficult just hard to get at. Lower UJ is hidden by the RH suspension turret.

PS You appear to be a northern version of me. thumbup

You should be able to do both jobs without moving the engine.

The existing rack mounts may be covered in crud - clean them and soak them in your favourite WD40 type product.

To get at the steering column joint, remove the inner engine valance if your car still has one. Again soak joint in your favourite WD40 type product.

Have a look in https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=explore... for the workshop manual

Which should be a penetrating oil, rather than a Water Displacement type product.
