£5k - £6k will get you a very, very good one. Have a look at this:

That sold for not a lot more than you're talking about. The club forum is really friendly, you should sign up and say hello! There's also an eBay section - if you've seen a car on eBay there will almost certainly be someone on the forum who has seen it or owned it.
The main issues are rot and cooling system (slightly unfair historic reputation for overheating) but there aren't many horror stories. The club has an excellent spares service and its only really front wings that can't be sourced any more.
Bargains do come up from time to time. I paid £800 for mine, one of the very earliest.
