PVC or Mohair?
Discussion
Hi guys. New to the Triumph section of this site so be nice.
My dad is restoring a TR7 convertible at the moment. It came with a hood but it was ripped near the rear window and pretty much cracked all over.
He was having a look over on the Rimmer Brothers site for a replacement hood and found they offer a PVC or a Mohair cover for the model.
My question is, what are the pro's and con's of each? Having very little experiences of convertibles we really are stumped.
Thanks in advance.

PVC; Easy to clean, doesn't look so expensive (& isn't).
Mohair; pg to clean especially left outside & will need treatment to stay clean & waterproof. More expensive to buy & a pig to fit.
My missus wanted a mohair on our TR7 aftr it's rebuild, it never fitted well & was looking grim after a winter outside.

Hi,
Got Mohair on mine, fitted easy enough. But have to agree on the cleaning ect. A friend recently fitted a PVC hood and didnt fit very well at the front but maybe they got a bad one, it took me ages to get it half decent when they asked to have a go for them. One tip if you go the PVC route, do it somewhere warm, make a huge diference.
Cheers John

Simple - is she going to be a garage decoration or a driven car?
If it's going to get next to no use then mohair.
If your dad's actually going to use it after restoration then PVC.
Quite simply mohair looks and feels better but if you actually use the car you need to accept some scrote may knife the roof to get in and PVC is a lot cheaper to replace.

I had a PVC hood fitted to my Vitesse about 7/8 years ago. Not had a huge amount of use probly done about 8000 miles, mainly roof down. The vinyl part of the hood is still fine, the windows less so. The welded seams are starting to split and have to use Renovo window polish to maintain a degree of clarity. Car is always garaged and the hood used only very occasionally mainly to stop wimmins moaning about hair issues.
I have heard that the windows are pretty much the same in all types of hood and even if I`d spent lots more on a mohair hood I`d still have similar issues. Apparently the life I`ve had out of my hood is pretty much normal.
Would be interesting to hear from someone with a mohair hood of similar age/use.

Epic thread revival time.
The car has been resprayed, rebuilt and electrical loom working correctly (we think).
My dad opted for the PVC hood. However, we're not sure where to start about putting it on. We asked a chap near use that a local VW dealer recommended for hood repairs but he had no idea what a Triumph TR7 was.
Is there any guides or advice about fitting a hood to these cars? Thanks in advance.

This book will probably tell you how to do it. I bought the TR6 edition in the same series, sensibly just after I'd finished restoring the car. I suggest you do like wise because it was actually very useful (or would have been). The car has been resprayed, rebuilt and electrical loom working correctly (we think).
