TR6 vs TR4 performance question
Discussion
I'd be surprised if the TR4 was quicker than the TR6 - 0-60 for the TR4 is listed on the Interweb as 10.9s vs. 8.2 for the TR6. Similarly top speeds are listed as 103/119MPH. The TR4 is a little lighter that the TR6 (966 vs. 1130Kg) but also only has 2/3 the power of the TR6 (100 vs. 150BHP).
The Spitfire looses between 0.5 to 1 litres on the TR4 and 1 to 1.5 litres on the TR6 so sits somewhat below both in the performance stakes. The later, most powerful 1500 Spitfire's 0-60 in 11.2s and only put out 71BHP to push their 815Kg around. The earliest Spitfire's were only rated at 0-60 in 17.3, 63BPH, 712Kg.

Sure you dont mean to compare the TR6 with the TR5 - basically a TR4A with injected 6 running gear as per early CP series TR6. Remember also, later CR series 6's from 73 on detuned to 125bhp for home market. Now if you compare earlier Tr's to federal export TR6's different ball game, they were strangled with emisions stuff and twin Stromberg carbs. Cant remember the figures but just about made around 100hp I beleive.
Quite right Purpleperil, good Spits do feel much quicker to drive than your actually going. I helped restore a Mk111 when I was into Triumphs and that was an absolute hoot to drive. That was all steel, and I fitted the top panel from a GT6 to the bonnet assembly so it looked the part as well.
I guess a std 4 would be better round the bends but a 5 or 6 would be a useful amount faster in a straightline. TR4 rear end is nicer straight out of the box for pushing hard. 6 is alot more "wobbly" instd form - need suspension sorted alot more to be as useful on the twisty bit.
But then so much you can do to them. (Yep I have both - SLIGHTLY Tweeked!!! It really is not all about straightline performance
I'd guess a spit is slower again by a good amount than a TR4.

my job used to be build tr racing cars from 3's,4's,5's,6's and even the ugly 7's and the TR 5 is the best of the bunch if you can find one looks of the 4 with the power of the 6, but finding one is the problem i'd go for the 6
1 thing though first thing you do to a 6 is take the lucas mk2 fuel injection off and throw it away then fit triple 45 webers BOOM your a monster
