Stag Clutch problems
Discussion
A work colleague has just got a Stag with the Trumph V8 in it.He has got issues with the clutch.the pedal or the clutch seems to stick and not be smooth. He has driven it about 500 miles since he got it and is not much better.Thoughts were on the car being idle for a while. Can anyone shed any light on the probable cause? Thanks
It could be the pedal, check there is a return spring, disconnect pedal from master cylinder check pedal is free, if not remove mounting bolt and lube bush.
It could be the master cylinder, slave cylinder or a problem with the pipe in between, get under the car and get an assistant to operate pedal and see if any sounds can be heard and waggle the release arm by hand and see if it is free.
Failing that you will have to pull pipe off slave, operate pedal and see if pedal pushes down easily and cleanly then returns back up, if so it is probably slave, if not remove pipe at master cylinder end and try again, if so it is probably the pipe that has flapped over inside, if not it is the master.
Quite often this is the master cylinder, and if he has done about 500 miles I would expect him to receive the shower of brake fluid on the feet anytime.

Is the clutch travel smooth while the engine is not running? If so, hydaulics would seem OK and it's quite likely to be mis-aligned engine/clutch/gearbox. This poor alignment combined with low tollerance is quite a common Stag problem.
I had the same problem recently until it was all taken apart and put back together by someone (a specialist) who knew what they were doing. Well worth the effort/cost as it's transformed the clutch from almost unusable to smooth and progressive.

He seems to think it is smooth when the engine is off, but sticking when he lifts his foot off the clutch when running. He has had a local garage take the exhaust and starter motor off today to look at the release bearing to see if that is sticking on the shaft from the box to the engine.I will let him have the info you have given also as it might help him out.
