Can anybody tell me how to get rid of play in the rack? The pinion moves a little before the rack moves, which doesn't inspire confidence!

before you start fiddling with the rack you must get rid of play in the impact clamp (just inside the bulkhead, the bottom column joint and any movement in the rack mounting bushes - these are much more likely sources of play.

Reducing play between the pinion and the rack involves removing shims from under the big nut. Never seen a problem in this area.
