Having just had a bad experience with a Triumph 'specialist' garage (see separate thread) I've realised it might pay to join a club for the advice they can offer.

TSSC charges double Club Triumph for membership. I realised it produces a monthly rather than bi-monthly mag but is there any to choose between them?

They both seem to claim to be the biggest Triumph clubs!

I own a 1968 Triumph Herald convertible and live in South London (Crystal Palace) if that makes any difference?

Have searched the net looking for reviews of these clubs and can't find any.

Many thanks.

I know quite a few people who are members of both. Upsides and downsides to both of them.

The Simple Answer: Join both - not much money really.

If you only want one well... it's all a little odd really.

Magazines

===

TSSC Win - Normally very good, monthly mag. that's worth reading - especially for Heralds/GT6/early Spitfires.
CT Lose - Very staid feeling, old-man magazine that's not really worth the effort of opening most of the time.

Club Meets

====

Not a side I'm really in to but I'd say...
TSSC Win - More local groups than CT.
CT Lose - Fewer meets.

Forums

Used to be quite close until TSSC screwed their won forums up and everyone found somewhere else to go.
CT Win - Much busier at the moment. Much younger users on the whole. Stronger for tuning/modifying cars for road or track, engine swaps, etc.
TSSC Lose - Used to be busier but after taking them selves off-line for a few months and coming back with an atrocious forum package very quiet. Used to be better for general running technical advice but too quite these days. Probably still has the edge for tracking/racing Triumphs.

Those are my opinions as a member of both clubs (if I remember to phone up and renew my memberships!).

CT for the win everytime, far more helpfull and much better events. TSSc were all very stuck up and generally unhealpfull. Club triumph is completely different with a diversity of people.

I've generally found the off-line side of Club Triumph to be far more stuck up than the TSSC. Come on Mattius have you ever READ the monthly(?) notes that get posted out! Maybe the writers need some tips on writing tone but... friendly it 'aint.

I've not been to many events/meets as they do bring out the clique old guys and... not my scene. The TSSC Essex guys seem to be OK but the TSSC Bristol meet I went to was pure clique - more or less blanked by the RO/90% of the people there and only one guy who seemed interested in talking to someone who wasn't 'local'. Never made it to my local CT meet as it's North London on a week-day evening and I'm City of London... Nice 2 hour drive at 10MPH there+back for a pint of orange juice and lemonade, or beer in the riverside pub over the road...

On-line is a different story - especially for CT. but over the years I've found the TSSC better for 'standard part' technical advice (e.g. how to replace GT6 drive doughnuts with new ones) and CT better for 'modified part' technical advice (e.g. how to replace GT6 drive doughnuts with CV joints).

I guess the best advice is join both this year but only renew the one that you prefer in 12 months time.

i cant really coment about the magazines i never read them just chuck them in the corner, most clubs nowadays are very toffy in the writtings of magazines, as it is mainly the older generation who write in them. I only participate online as the information is two way and can be clarified.
Meets and events, well not been to any meets cant be bothered with them, but events well the RBRR (Round britain reliability run) and the 10CR (10 Countries run) are undoubtably some of the greatest club events in any club all organised by club triumph, tssc organises, emmm... , emm... ohh! i saw a trackday once!

For Herald you are definitely better off joining TSSC, but by jolly am i envious off you all here in Belgium we aren't excatly spoilt for choice. I really enjoy the mag - lots of tech stuff, anecdotes and diversity- old folk in caps and anoraks ( the copper he's really anoying ) but then the Herald secretary is youngish and "out there " doing stuff.
Not silly to join both though

enjoy the herald

Glad I'm not the only one who thinks that! I do believe he changed the picture that goes with his column not too long ago... to one of him wearing a cravat!?!

I agree that CT organise better national events whereas the TSSC have better local area events smile

Sometimes they even work well together!

These two clubs often hold their meeting on a joint basis.

Try the Club Triumph Forum http://club.triumph.org.uk/cgi-bin/forum/Blah.pl? I think you will like it.

Club Triumph is "the club that does" and has its origins in being a car company club rather than as a classic car club. In my experience I am a member of both there are far fewer polishers/concourse types in Club Triumph.

TSSC is a business and therefore provides professional support to its members whereas Club Triumph does not employ anybody and is more amateur.

Take you pick or join both for now and try em out. As with all clubs the more you put in or try the more you will get out so get stuck in and enjoy.

I joined the TR register forum and gave up waiting for my login details, they arrived after 3 weeks!

CAs an aside, can you believe how many car forums won't even let you view their contents without being a member!

Eagerly went onto the site only to find the search function not working for several days, didn't give up but instead wrote an email to the webmaster about it, that was 2 weeks ago!!!!! frown

IMHO blocking read access is a retarded viewpoint. It's like expecting people to buy a car without letting them see it or test drive it - trust us our car is grate/trust us our forums are full of useful technical advice and not just in-fighting, flame wars and polishers.

I do know why (at least some) clubs block this. A lawyer tells them they are more exposed as an open forums (publishing in to public domain) than closed (publishing in to private domain) so they panic and lock them down.
