Should imagine your biggest problem is going to be ......insurance.
Open top, two seater sports car and you'll want to insure it as soon as you're 17 - specialist classic car insurers generally won't touch anyone under 21, some only cover the over 25's

That aside, a Spit is dead easy and relatively cheap to maintain (provided it isn't a rustbucket) and if it's a pre 1974 model the road tax is free - but the insurance, if you can get it, will more than make up for that.

I bought a brand new Mk 4 Pimento red Spitfire in January 1973 when I was 19.....cloud9

Brilliant little car, easy to service, cheap to run, good on fuel, although I would imagine most are very long in the tooth now........

Maybe an MX5 would be a better bet??...scratchchin

I MOT'd one the other day and there wasn't any rust underneath at all. In fact there was so much oil covering the underside I doubt it would ever rust.tongue out

yikes

nono

Try Quinn direct TPFT.............

Why not consider a "seven" type kit car similar to a Westfield or Tiger, with someone like Adrian Flux more like £500...

Ring up Footman James, you may have to join either Club Triumph or the TSSC but they will insure a 17yr old on a Spitfire for around £600-800 Much cheaper than a modern car!! I had a spitfire at 17 no problems and have lots of friends who insured a spitfire/gt6 etc at 17 they will also let you add a second Triumph to the policy. Go for it!

Your welcome! Enjoy Spitfire ownership! Like I did smile) Make sure when you ring footman james up though that you state its the TSSC deal your after, ask for Trudi I think, cos there are some numpties working there. I was insured for £690 on a spit mk4 at 17 TPFT and also you get free breakdown recovery, where in the country are you? Phone no. for footman james is 0845 458 6781 I think. Steve

Suffolk no, Cheshire. Maybe you can't get a quote online if your under 25? If you ring them up you will though. Your after a young drivers policy, TSSC = Triumph Sports Six Club www.tssc.org.uk I think. I and many friends have been insured from 17 so don't take no for an answer, any problems just ask.

Nope a 1971 Mk IV with a mk3 engine, if you get a 1500 make sure it has overdrive they don't like to rev infact i'd definately recommend getting a spit with overdrive regardless of model. The best engine is fitted to the mk3 spitfire lookout for the prefix FD it has lightest bottom end and a decent cam as standard. Sign up to here http://www.club.triumph.org.uk/forum/ you'll find all the help you need, buy the best you can afford, bodywork is the important bit. I've got a GT6 these days

Maverick, if you want to see some Spitfires and talk to owners, get someone to take you to the TSSC Suffolk area meeting tomorrow night (7/8/07). It's at The Magpie pub in Stonham Parva which is on the A140. It's the annual fill the car park with Triumphs night so there should be a few there including mine.

Sorry, was meaning to put the time in the message. People normally start arriving from about 7:30 and start leaving after 9ish.
