TVR AJPV8 into Dolly Sprint
Discussion

Actually it's quite a daft idea.
The Sprint is an engine looking for a car, and the TR7 is a car looking for an engine.
Better to try to make a Broadside or Lynx out of a TR7 and fit the AJP in that.
Just my twopennuth.
Hi Gavin,
I'm a bit lost. Where does a TR7 come into this particular equation? It's a Dolomite Sprint that currently has a stag lump.
Cheers,
Scott
Well, a Sprint with anything other than a Sprint engine is defeating the whole object of having a Sprint, as the engine makes the car.
So putting a Stag engine in is sacrilege, unless you found a way of putting Sprint heads on it.
If the guy is a Triumph fan and wants a labour intensive project then making a Broadside or Lynx replica would be a good start. If it is TR7 based that would be a good use of a TVR engine.
But honestly, a TVR engine in a Sprint..... It's a powerful engine in a car that is generally overweight and doesn't handle with the aerodynamics of a brick.
I love Sprints, I know them inside out, but the charm of owning it is the engine. Take that away and it's a Triumph 1500 with an engine conversion.

Hi Gavin,
I totally agree that the Sprint engine is perfect in a Sprint. I'd be stupid not to as I race one in the CTCRC. They can be quite fragile engines though at the 200+ bhp range and need careful treatment. Having had 2 bearing failures this year on the bottom end, I know this as well!
But, a Dolomite weighs less than a TR7 in road trim and I believe with decent bushes and shock absorbers, they can handle very well. Aerodynamics aren't great but lets be honest, unless you are going to do high speed runs, it's not really a factor.
Phil loves Dollies which is why he wants to do something with the immaculate shell he has built up over the last few years. He likes his projects and the AJP V8 route hasn't beeen done before.
I believe his Stag engine is being relocated back into a Stag so from the purist point of view, some balance is being returned!
It's good to hear someone with a different perspective so please don't think I'm trying to 'shoot you down'!

Interesting that you've had crank bearing failures because that shouldn't be an issue with that engine.
I made a central oil pick up pipe for mine after I failed a jackshaft bearing whilst on a track day at Cadwell Park. Under braking the standard oil pick up pipe is starved and obviously causes a problem.
You could use an accusump if the regs permit it.
If you want some good engine prep work done try Chesman Engineering on Coventry 689665, Ken Clarke gets his machining done there.

Crank bearing failures do seem to be one of the more common failures on race engines. You are absolutely right in asserting that it is an oil feed issue. The engine now has a redesigned larger winged sump, directly copied from an old Group 2 racing sump from the 70's. The pick up is positioned differently as well.
Ken's son was having a number of bearing failures (or so he told me a few months ago). Can't remember what it was in his case. I think it was an incorrect oil filter with a shortage of holes in the caretridge.
Thanks for the advice. If this one fails again I'll need that number!

Thought you guys might be interested to know that Darren, the owner of the dolly with the Cosworth engine did a 185mph run at Bruntingthorpe today WITHOUT using the Nitrous!
Now that's just crazy
The man must have melon sized cahoonas
Saw the car at Rockingham in the paddock a couple of years back. Thought it was a joke with the rear pipe, then had a look. Nice Job !
Which Sprint is yours Scott, the name doesn't ring any bells.
I've been around the CTCRC for a few years (except last) and know of most drivers.
Not sure yet but my race car may be up for grabs soon. New toys and all.
Cheers

Hi,
I'm new to the club and only managed Thruxton and Brands this year due to a re-occurring spun bearing problem. Hopefully, a newly designed larger sump will help the situation for 2006.

BTW, darren is selling the Sprint with a standard cossie engine and smaller turbo. Reckons it will still put out 350bhp.
What do/did you race?

I have had this for quite a few years now
Is ready to race, just needs a budget for next year.
Problem is too many hobbies
Saw you at Thruxton this year. You were having a few problems it turned out. Would have said hello otherwise
Andy
Found a pic of Darrens motor at that meet

Yes, I had a pretty crap day. Forgot to check tyre pressures before practice. After practice found they were 40 something psi cold! Had never done a lap of Thruxton and managed 4 before the Firenza went into the tyre wall and red flagged the whole lot. Went out on the walming up lap only to hear the engine making a dreadful knocking noise and no power! Straight into the pits and no race. Saved the engine though. Just one conrod and knackered crank broken.
I know one or two people teetering on the edge of wanting to race so if you want to pm me some specs and price, I'll put the word around. I've seen pictures of your car before. Hard to forget in the distinctive colours! Are you racing elsewhere (tophat?) or something totally different?

Hi Scott
No not racing anywhere at the moment, except for the odd track day with my new toy, a TVR Griffith
Would have raced in the 2 driver 1 hour at Pembry if they hadn't cancelled it.
I would need to get a fair price for the car as it's been a hard decision to possibly let it go.
Car would be an excellent entry to saloon car racing. Excellent condition shell and engine.
In group 2 spec at the moment, work fine and is very reliable, but need the compression increasing to get the power back up. Recently re-worked head fitted, but is in need of a bit of skimming.
Car has 13 point integral roll cage picking up on the front turrets, very strong and handles very well. Spax fully adjustables and 4 pot vented brakes.
Minimalist is the word. Weight of the whole car is 875kgs. Which as you would know is only 5 kgs off the minimum. To my knowledge only Nigel Garrets Championship winning Sprint is lighter. If I took out the multipoint cage it would be underweight.
The red on the fabulous green paintwork is self adhesive vinyl and can be removed to leave whole car green, ready for a different livery is required.
Completed but shabby racer would cost £2K, top flight Sprint with history best part of £10K, I would pitch mine somewhere near the middle of those.
Open to further conversation and sensible offers

in a car that is generally overweight and doesn't handle with the aerodynamics of a brick.
And the Sprint is some 100Kilo's lighter than the TVR the engine it came out of?.
Can you tell me why you Race a Sprint.
The list of car's Ived owned is fairly large and I'm at that stage in my life where I prefer the older car's that don't look like a Jelly Mould and without the Maker's Badge stuck on the bonnet you would't really know who made it.
The Stag engine was originaly fitted to prove it could be done and it did work very well,
I also went into the possibility of having a Sprint head mirror casted to go 32v but the cost's wouldn't of been worth it really,
The Stag engine by the way is not going back into a Stag.
TVR AJP8 was chosen being it's the same size as the Stag admit quite a few pound's lighter as well,
and because it also hasn't been done before.
Rover's V8 have been done before and I want something different.
Like the old saying goes
You cant please all the people all the time

Boosted is putting a turbo 700bhp LS1 in one.
Come on AJP / Dolly.
