Hi Guy's,

Have had a new TR7 shell sitting doing nothing for the last 30 years and have set about building it up.

I bought a 4.6 TVR engine with Tremec gearbox to slot in the hole.

How easy is it going to be to fit the engine right back against the bulkhead and make the heater inlet work?

Hi Hugh,

To get the Engine further back in the engine bay you will need to modify a TR8 subframe. Its been years since I built my last TR7 V8 but I am sure there used to be a company that sold modified subframes called FG Rallying (Funky Gibbon ?). I used to have their catalog.

Also try Rimmer Brothers, S and S Preparations, Robsport and Triumph Tune is they are still around - good luck...

Hi Stinkfoot,

Many thanks for your post, I did not get a notification of your post, will see if I can reset the rules.

I used to know Mike Gibbon pretty well when I was rallying a TR7 V8 30 years ago, interesting to hear he is still on the go.

I used to make subframes with the correct bracketry for the engine 2" back, it was the exhaust manifold that was the hard bit. At the time I built my own from a bunch of bends that, I think, Janspeed bent for me.

I found somebody selling a standard one with engine brackets, so went for that.

When fitting the engine, I pulled the short lever extension from the TVR Tremec gearbox




I found that I could move the engine back about 1 1/2" before the inlet plenum touched the bonnet catch bracket. I also had to turn the top of the plenum round so that I increased to clearance, not sure if this will be a pest for the wiring later on, so might need another solution.

Here is a picture of the shell with it’s engine bay painted.




Will post more as I go.

Yes, i agree with Jony. In all due respect why do this? Stick it in a chim that needs an engine rebuild. Ive driven a few TR7's and couldn't imagine anything more wasted in such a BL Mess.

Maybe because a well sorted TR7 is a very nice car to drive, with good handling characterics?

I would agree with Yertis, a well sorted TR7/8 is great fun to drive. Poly bushes, Spring & shockers & the right rubber !! Great fun1

But have you driven a sorted one?

No offense to TVR's, but the TR7/8 has the pedigree and heritage. Including circuit racing and rallying. The Chim's have only ever been competed against other TVR's and lack this international competition history.

Thats rich. The 7 had a v8 in it well before the chim. my brother had a chim until my stag showed it a clean pair of heals!

Hmmmmm, was not expecting all the negative comments regarding TR7's.

Here are some pictures of my TR7 V8 rally car from 30 years ago.

For all those doubters about whether they handled well, last time I looked, I still hold the record for the fastest sportscar at Fintray Hillclimb, that record was set 30 years ago.

Then TVR did it properly. Yes they are unreliable but TVR ownership is a lot more fun and satisfying than Triumph ownership and ive owned various vehicles from both marques.

I expect opinion to be biased in the Triumph section of this forum and i wont post on this again but IMHO the TR7 was an awful car - if you dont like that sorry.

That looks great. How's your current TR project going, you got the engine in yet?

Yup, got the engine and box in.

The TVR propshaft fitted using one half of a Jag 4HA universal joint on to the 2HA TR7 axle.

I ordered exhaust manifolds from Maniflow, when ordering, I explained that the engine was 2" further back than standard as per the last of the Works rally cars, the guy said that would be no problem since he had built the manifolds for the Works TR7's. I thought this was a strange comment since the ones I was aware of were built by Janspeed.

Guess what, the manifolds do not fit and now he wants an extra £50 + VAT to fix his mistake, really pissed off about this, since it took ages to muck about and take photographs to show exactly how the manifolds were wrong.

On different subject, I am needing some help to fit a new diff ratio in my TR7 axle. Does any one know of a good diff builder that can fit an SD1 diff in there for me?

I will post some more pictures soon.

I am amazed at the negative reply to the TR7 V8. Obviously people have never driven a proper sorted one. Great thread Hugh smile

I'm not, mention of TR7s on PH always rings out the idiots.

There is a good reason the Germans make some bloody amazing cars and we dont anymore. The TR7 is one of many of those reasons. I love the small chassis Triumphs and anything pre TR7.

Sorry that offends but it is the bloody truth!!!

The truth is that the TR7 outsold all the previous TR models completely, despite the bone idle scousers meaning a factory move was essential (Two factory moves in 5-6 years actually), despite the shortage of parts mainly LT77 boxes. The TR7 was a massive move on from what came previously. The monocoque was massively strong, designed for a crash & rollover test that were never fully implemented in the US. The reason they didn't carry on selling it was due to the strong dollar which meant selling it at a loss. The other truth is that in period it did quite well in road tests against its peers.
There were lots of reasons BL died blaming the 7 & thinking we should have carried on making the previous stuff which were all suffering declining sales, aside from becoming unsaleable due to emissions & crash protection is cloud cuckoo land.

Also I think you'll find JLR (Made in Britain) are doing pretty well against the germans actually!

Using JLR which is funded from overseas investment is no way to justify the huge failure of the UK car industry, which i am sorry, the TR7 played a part in.
